History of the Inquisition in three volumes is a groundbreaking work on the subject of Inquisition, written by Henry Charles Lea, one of the main authorities on the subject. His goal was to present an impartial account of the institution as it existed during the earlier period. In order to accurately appreciate the process of its development and the results of its activity the author takes in consideration the factors controlling the minds and souls of men during these times. He recapitulates nearly all the spiritual and intellectual movements of the Middle Ages, glancing at the condition of society in certain of its phases. Beginning with the state of church in 12th and 13th century, the study includes various forms of heresy emerging throughout the European continent from Spain and France west, to Slavic countries in Eastern Europe. Lea particularly deals with various fields of inquisitorial activity, notably its utilization in political purposes. Though his study of the Inquisition was criticized for anti-Spanish bias, it is thoroughly researched and contains interesting details surrounding this notorious institution.

¿Cuál es la encrucijada aquí? Dos conceptos: deseo y palabra. La demanda de deseo de participación ciudadana significa otro reparto de la palabra, la cual traduce este deseo como una intervención en la vida pública. La tesis que el filósofo francés sostiene es que la disyuntiva por la cual las democracias están sometidas a juicio tiene relación con la anulación de la palabra, debido a la invalidación de las voces que no han sido escuchadas y que buscan la participación en común.
Esta puesta en común es expresada en la queja frente a los gobiernos que han pretendido hablar por el pueblo a través del populismo, del decreto y del control. Hablar en el lugar de los gobernados y en su nombre, ha conllevado a una repetición de ciertos traumas legitimados por los Estados de excepción que se manifiestan en populismos democráticos. La participación no debe pasar por la desconfianza en la voz popular, definida desde la ignorancia, la desinformación o el desinterés y que, por tanto, se presume que necesita ser iluminada y guiada. Esto solo ha legitimado una demo-fobia.
El propósito de este libro es repensar una democracia participativa que pueda anudar un contra-peritaje por parte de los gobernados, que no se reduzca a individuos, quienes actúan animados por la preocupación de defender sus propios intereses y no escuchan sus afectos. Lo que caracteriza este contra-peritaje es crear redes y movimientos asociativos que reúnan el compromiso para la vigilancia crítica contra los abusos de poder, las negligencias y las violencias.

This extensive and important section of the United States is but little known. Perhaps there is no region between the Mississippi river and the Atlantic shores, of which so little accurate information is before the public; a flying tourist only, having occasionally added a note to his diary, as he skirted its forest-lined borders.

Sehr ungewöhnlich für einen Krimi, steht das Ende des Romans hier schon von der ersten Seite an fest: Im Beirut der achtziger Jahre wird ein österreichischer Kriminalpolizist erschossen und sein Leichnam zur Beerdigung in die Heimat überführt. Das nimmt der Geschichte allerdings nichts von ihrer Spannung – ganz im Gegenteil! Eigentlicher Beginn des Romans ist dann ein Treffen von Kriminal-Gruppeninspektor Johann Bauer, vor zwei Jahren vom Referat «Gewaltdelikte» im Wiener Sicherheitsbüro auf einen gutbezahlten Auslandsjob in Beirut versetzt, mit dem arabischen Informanten Mechmed Khalil, der ihm die Adresse eines zwielichtigen Geschäftsmanns zuspielt, welcher in eines der üblichen dunklen Geschäfte zwischen Waffenschieberei, Drogenhandel und Terrorismusfinanzierung verstrickt ist. Johann Bauer traut seinen Augen kaum, denn er stößt auf einen alten Bekannten aus Wien: Sebastian Suchy aus der Seidelgasse 7, der ein anrüchiges «Ex- und Importbüro» betreibt und, wie Johann mit Verwunderung konstatiert, noch nicht einmal vorbestraft ist. Dabei ist er doch selbst mit dabei gewesen, bei jenem Raubüberfall in der Seidelgasse, wo er Sebastian Suchy kennenlernen musste – er und sein Kollege und Freund Micky Heidinger, damals beide noch junge Kriminalbeamte im Wiener Sicherheitsbüro, Referat «Gewaltdelikte». Und Micky Heidinger ist auch jetzt wieder an seiner Seite, als Johann Bauer zu ermitteln beginnt und sich bald eingestehen muss, hier wohl in ein Wespennest gestochen zu haben …Leo Frank (auch Leo Frank-Maier, gebürtig eigentlich Leo Maier; 1925–2004) ist ein österreichischer Kriminalautor, der in seinem Werk die eigene jahrzehntelange Berufserfahrung als Kriminalbeamter und Geheimdienstler verarbeitet. In seiner Funktion als Kriminalbeamter bei der Staatspolizei Linz wurde Leo Maier 1967 in eine Informationsaffäre um den Voest-Konzern verwickelt. Man verdächtigte ihn, vertrauliches Material an ausländische Nachrichtendienste geliefert zu haben, und er geriet unter dem Namen «James Bond von Linz» in die Medien. Es folgte eine Strafversetzung nach Wien, wo er nach wenigen Monaten wiederum ein Angebot zur Versetzung nach Zypern annahm. Zwischen 1967 und 1974 war Leo Maier Kripo-Chef der österreichischen UN-Truppe in Nikosia. Auf Zypern begann er seine ersten Kriminalromane zu schreiben und legte sich den Autorennamen Leo Frank zu. Doch dauerte es noch einige Jahre, bis 1976 sein erster Roman «Die Sprechpuppe» publiziert wurde. 1974 kehrte er – in der Voest-Affäre inzwischen voll rehabilitiert – nach Linz zurück. Er leitete verschiedene Referate (Gewaltreferat, Sittenreferat, Mordreferat), bevor er 1980 zum obersten Kriminalisten der Stadt ernannt wurde. Mit 59 Jahren ging er in Pension und zog in seine Wahlheimat Bad Ischl, wo er 2004 verstarb.-
