Wśród nich żyją Henry, malarz zbierający kawałki drewna, by zbudować łódź, Lee Chong – właściciel niewielkiego sklepu, w którym jest wszystko, i Doktor z laboratorium biologicznego, doglądający chorych i leczący nieszczęśliwe dusze. To zaledwie kilka budynków, ale ludzie i historie, które skrywa ulica, emanują miłością, ciepłem, zrozumieniem i przywracają wiarę w proste wartości. Opublikowany w 1954 roku „Cudowny Czwartek” opisuje losy tych samych i nowych mieszkańców dzielnicy tuż po drugiej wojnie światowej. John Steinbeck (1902 – 1968) – amerykański powieściopisarz, laureat literackiej Nagrody Nobla 1962 za „realistyczny i poetycki dar, połączony z subtelnym humorem i ostrym widzeniem spraw społecznych". Jego najbardziej znane powieści to „Grona gniewu”, „Myszy i ludzie”, „Na wschód od Edenu” i „Tortilla Flat”. W 1982 roku na postawie „Ulicy Nadbrzeżnej” i „Cudownego czwartku” powstał film w reżyserii Davida S. Warda. W rolach głównych wystąpili Debra Winger i Nick Nolte. Copyright © John Steinbeck, 1945. Gathered in this important volume are seven newspaper articles on migrant farm workers that John Steinbeck wrote for The San Francisco News in 1936, three years before The Grapes of Wrath. With the inquisitiveness of an investigative reporter and the emotional power of a novelist in his prime, Steinbeck toured the squatters' camps and Hoovervilles of California. The Harvest Gypsies gives us an eyewitness account of the horrendous Dust Bowl migration, a major event in California history, and provides the factual foundation for Steinbeck’s masterpiece, The Grapes of Wrath. Included are twenty-two photographs by Dorothea Lange and others, many of which accompanied Steinbeck's original articles.
