By combining academic insight with practitioner experience, the new edition addresses the foundations of the profession with an eye on the future. It's an important contribution to the canon for the profession.”

—Sue Cunningham, President & CEO, Council for Advancement and Support of Education

“The landscape of fundraising today is rapidly changing, so keeping up with donors' priorities and wishes is more critical than ever. Achieving Excellence in Fundraising is the most comprehensive and knowledgeable guide to understanding fundraising principles in a global and diverse world. Adopting the most effective fundraising strategy will not only set you up for success, but also lead to a positive impact to improve the world. This guide is what all fundraiser and nonprofit leaders need in their toolbox.”

—Ann Putnam Marks, Regional Partnerships Manager, UNICEF Private Fundraising & Partnerships

“Only a handful of books are so good to start with that the late author's colleagues gather periodically to refresh the content for new generations. Achieving Excellence in Fundraising is both a classic and a contemporary exploration of the topics fundraisers, nonprofit CEOs, volunteers, and students need to be confident, professional, and current in this unique role that is needed more and more around the world. The original deep experience, journalistic flair, and sheer heart of fundraising pioneer and teacher Hank Rosso is intact, with core and principles conveyed for ready application. Add in the new channels, techniques, evidence, and innovation in fundraising and you have the kind of book all will want both as brain food, and in the background of their Zoom meetings as a hallmark that they are serious professionals. The world needs more really skilled and authentic fundraisers. This book is a great contribution to that goal.”

—Wendy Scaife, Director, Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies, QUT

“Building on the previous iterations, the Fifth Edition authors provide modern and insightful perspectives on the evolution of the fundraising profession. The compilation of lived experiences and current research will energize long‐tenured fundraising practitioners and inspire the next generation of fundraising professionals. I would recommend sharing this book with your teams, close colleagues, and others who desire to better understand and appreciate the breadth and depth of this noble profession.”

—James H. Moore, Jr., President & CEO, University of Illinois Foundation

—Don Campbell, Founder and Chairman Emeritus (Retired), Campbell & Company

“Kudos to the authors of the Fifth Edition of this must‐read classic. New chapters and comprehensive revisions elevate the substantial value of this book for fundraising professionals and anyone interested in the potential of philanthropy.”

—Mary Tschirhart, Professor & Director, Trachtenberg School of Public Administration and Public Policy, The George Washington University

“Donors are now activating their philanthropy in innovative ways that are meeting the moment. In this Fifth Edition, Achieving Excellence in Fundraising provides a comprehensive framework for all nonprofit organizations to design and implement a fundraising strategy that engages today's donors and transforms institutions and the communities they serve.”

—Helene D. Gayle, President & CEO, The Chicago Community Trust

The Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy is the world's first school dedicated solely to education and research about philanthropy. Established in 2012, the school was inaugurated in 2013 and named for one of America's great philanthropic families in honor of its generations of generosity and leadership.

Indiana University (IU) has been at the vanguard of philanthropy education since the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University was founded at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) in 1987. Led by the center, IU established the field of philanthropic studies; established the nation's first bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. degrees in the field; and created the nation's first endowed chair in philanthropy.

The Lilly Family School of Philanthropy prepares students, philanthropy professionals, donors, and volunteers to be thoughtful innovators and leaders who create positive and lasting change. Alumni of its programs lead national nonprofits and foundations, serve international relief organizations, and lead hands‐on neighborhood human services centers.

As the pioneer of the unique, liberal arts‐based field of philanthropic studies, the school and its world‐class faculty offer unparalleled academic degree programs and rigorous, objective research that sets the standard for the field and provides a crucial resource for philanthropy and nonprofits. Through global partnerships, teaching and learning experiences on six continents, and an international student body, the school increases understanding of philanthropy within and across cultures.

The Lilly Family School of Philanthropy integrates innovative academic, research, international and training programs with groundbreaking resources such as The Fund Raising School, the Women's Philanthropy Institute, the Mays Family Institute on Diverse Philanthropy, and Lake Institute on Faith & Giving.

The Fund Raising School, which Hank Rosso moved to Indiana University in 1987 to form the centerpiece for the founding of the Center on Philanthropy, continues today as the premier international, university, and curriculum‐based fundraising education program. For the nearly 50 years since its founding in 1974, The Fund Raising School has taught
