Albert Einstein characterized the work of James Clerk Maxwell as the «most profound and the most fruitful that physics has experienced since the time of Newton.» Max Planck went even further, declaring that «he achieved greatness unequalled,» and Richard Feynman asserted that «From a long view of the history of mankind — seen from, say, ten thousand years from now — there can be little doubt that the most significant event of the nineteenth century will be judged as Maxwell's discovery of the laws of electrodynamics.» Maxwell made numerous other contributions to the advancement of science, but the greatest work of his life was devoted to electricity. An Elementary Treatise on Electricity appeared at a time when very few books on electrical measurements were available to students, and its compact treatment not only elucidates the theory of electricity but also serves to develop electrical ideas in readers' minds. The author describes experiments that demonstrate the principal facts relating an electric charge as a quantity capable of being measured, deductions from these facts, and the exhibition of electrical phenomena. This volume, published posthumously from Maxwell's lecture notes at the Cavendish Laboratory — which he founded at the University of Cambridge — is supplemented by a selection of articles from his landmark book, Electricity and Magnetism. A classic of science, this volume is an eminently suitable text for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students.

A great mathematician and teacher bridges the gap between science and the humanities in this exposition of the philosophy of science. Philipp Frank, a distinguished physicist and philosopher in his own right, traces the history of science from Aristotle to Einstein to illustrate philosophy’s ongoing role in the scientific process.Suitable for undergraduate students and other readers, this volume explains modern technology’s role in the gradual erosion of the rapport between physical theories and philosophical systems, and offers suggestions for restoring the link between these related areas. Dr. Frank examines the ancient Greek concept of natural science to illustrate the development of modern science; then, using geometry as an example, he charts its progress from Euclidean principles through the interpretations of Descartes, Mill, Kant, and the rise of four-dimensional and non-Euclidean geometry. Additional topics include the laws of motion, before and after innovations of Galileo and Newton; perceptions of motion, light, and relativity through the ages; metaphysical interpretations of relativistic physics; the motion of atomic objects and the phenomena and formulations of atomic physics; and the principle of causality and the validation of theories.

Liszt's reputation as perhaps the greatest pianist of all time is powerfully supported by his dazzling body of work for solo piano. The undiminished popularity of his etudes with pianists and audiences alike have made them among the most performed and recorded works for solo piano in the romantic repertoire. This superbly produced yet inexpensive two-volume edition presents all of Liszt's etudes as edited by the great pianist, composer, and musical scholar Ferruccio Busoni for the Franz Liszt Society and published by Breitkopf and Härtel in Leipzig in 1910–11.This second volume, Series II, includes many of Liszt's most important piano works. Liszt's creative method can be observed in his reworking of the Etudes d' Exécution Transcendante d'après Paganini into the Grande Etudes de Paganini (better known as simply the Paganini Etudes), and the similar revision of the «Morceau de Salon» into «Ab Irato.» The separate etudes cover a wide stylistic range, from the dazzling technical display of the most popular of the Paganini Etudes, «La Campanella,» to the graceful, restrained lyricism of «Waldesrauschen.» Each will bring to pianists and their listeners a moving encounter with the genius of this towering musical personality.

Each of the 27 captivating tales in this rich collection, passed down from generation to generation, long ago provided an evening's entertainment and instruction for Sioux youngsters sitting spellbound around the campfire. Shortened and simplified for young readers and listeners of today, the stories include creation myths, animal fables reminiscent of Aesop, and stories of brave heroes, beautiful princesses, wicked witches, cruel giants, and other universal characters. In these stories, however, the characters unmistakably belong to the fascinating world of the Plains Indians.Among the memorable tales in this collection are «The Buffalo and the Field-Mouse,» «The Raccoon and the Bee-Tree,» «Unktomee and His Bundle of Songs,» «The Festival of the Little People,» «The Little Boy Man,» «The First Battle,» «The Beloved of the Sun,» «The Laugh-Maker,» «The Girl Who Married the Star,» «North Wind and Star Boy,» «The Magic Arrows,» «The Ghost-Wife,» and 15 more. Chosen by Charles A. Eastman, who was raised as a Sioux in the 1870s and 1880s, the tales include such unforgettable characters as Unktomee, the sly one (much like Br'er Fox of the Uncle Remus stories); Chanotedah (an Indian brownie or gnome); and the cannibal giants Eya and Double-Face. Young readers and students of Native American legend and lore will delight in these authentic, time-honored stories.

Group theory represents one of the most fundamental elements of mathematics. Indispensable in nearly every branch of the field, concepts from the theory of groups also have important applications beyond mathematics, in such areas as quantum mechanics and crystallography.Hans J. Zassenhaus, a pioneer in the study of group theory, has designed this useful, well-written, graduate-level text to acquaint the reader with group-theoretic methods and to demonstrate their usefulness as tools in the solution of mathematical and physical problems. Starting with an exposition of the fundamental concepts of group theory, including an investigation of axioms, the calculus of complexes, and a theorem of Frobenius, the author moves on to a detailed investigation of the concept of homomorphic mapping, along with an examination of the structure and construction of composite groups from simple components. The elements of the theory of p-groups receive a coherent treatment, and the volume concludes with an explanation of a method by which solvable factor groups may be split off from a finite group. Many of the proofs in the text are shorter and more transparent than the usual, older ones, and a series of helpful appendixes presents material new to this edition. This material includes an account of the connections between lattice theory and group theory, and many advanced exercises illustrating both lattice-theoretical ideas and the extension of group-theoretical concepts to multiplicative domains.

A rising tide of witchcraft hysteria overwhelmed the sober Puritan communities of 17th-century New England, culminating in the notorious Salem witch trials of 1692. Rooted in religious zealotry as well as political friction and property disputes, the witch-hunts ranged beyond the gallows to ruin countless innocent lives. Voices from both sides of the controversy can be heard within this compilation of revealing documents from one of American history’s darkest eras.Assembled by a distinguished historian, this volume comprises 13 original narratives by judges, ministers, government officials, and others involved in the trials and persecution of the accused. Many firsthand reports from the men and women charged with sorcery appear here, along with accounts of the evidence against them, tests for witchcraft, trials and executions, and much more. Written by such famous figures as Increase and Cotton Mather (and featuring the first publication of the latter's «A Brand Pluck'd Out of the Burning»), the narratives include «Lithobolia, or the Stone-Throwing Devil,» by Richard Chamberlain (1698); «Memorable Providences, Relating to Witchcrafts and Possessions,» by Cotton Mather (1689); «A Brief and True Narrative of Witchcraft at Salem Village,» by Deodat Lawson (1692); «A Modest Inquiry into the Nature of Witchcraft,» by John Hale (1702); and more.A peerless source of firsthand information, this compilation offers a superb resource to anyone interested in the belief in witchcraft and its effect on colonial America.

"A strange, tragic, inspired novel . . . as poignant as anything in modern fiction." — E. M. ForsterThis acclaimed novel marked the debut of one of the twentieth century's most brilliant and important writers. In Virginia Woolf's captivating exploration of a young woman's growing self-awareness, the events of a shipboard journey to South America parallel the naive heroine's inner quest. Her experiences, from a first kiss to a surprising flowering of real love, may inspire the reader to reflect on gender roles in society, love among intellectuals, and the strivings and sorrows of life. The Voyage Out offers an excellent introduction to Woolf's writing. Not only is it the first of her novels, it is also one of the most accessible. Less formally experimental than Woolf's later books, but highly representative of her poetic style and innovative techniques, it offers a moving depiction of the thrills and confusion of youth.
