In 1991 the Chartered Institute of Building initiated a multi-institute task force and a Code of Practice for Project Management was published in 1992, with a second edition in 1996. Like previous editions, this third edition has been substantially revised to embody the results of intensive consultation between the CIOB and representatives of the professional bodies concerned with construction and development. The Code is divided into two sections: the first covers eight stages associated with projects from inception to completion, each one well supported with diagrams, flowcharts and checklists the second section contains a project handbook, complete with guidance documentation and checklists. The third edition features new guidance on: project planning EU procurement procedures performance management plan partnering project risk assessment environmental impact assessment procurement options and value for money framework. Effective project management involves the assessment and management of risk, and this is a strong theme throughout the Code. The Code of Practice provides an authoritative guide to the principles and practice of construction project management. It will be a key reference source for clients, contractors and professionals, irrespective of the size and nature of the project. Much of the information is also relevant to project managers in other commercial spheres. On the last edition The code is an outstanding example of collaboration between key professional industry bodies working in a team … it represents a significant step forward … to help achieve successful outcomes for both clients and the construction industry. Sir Michael Latham I strongly recommend this valuable multi-institutional code of practice to all who are involved in construction project management and development Sir Stuart Lipton

Although it is now possible to integrate many millions of transistors on a single chip, traditional digital circuit technology is now reaching its limits, facing problems of cost and technical efficiency when scaled down to ever-smaller feature sizes. The analysis of biological neural systems, especially for visual processing, has allowed engineers to better understand how complex networks can effectively process large amounts of information, whilst dealing with difficult computational challenges. Analog and parallel processing are key characteristics of biological neural networks. Analog VLSI circuits using the same features can therefore be developed to emulate brain-style processing. Using standard CMOS technology, they can be cheaply manufactured, permitting efficient industrial and consumer applications in robotics and mobile electronics. This book explores the theory, design and implementation of analog VLSI circuits, inspired by visual motion processing in biological neural networks. Using a novel approach pioneered by the author himself, Stocker explains in detail the construction of a series of electronic chips, providing the reader with a valuable practical insight into the technology. Analog VLSI Circuits for the Perception of Visual Motion: analyses the computational problems in visual motion perception; examines the issue of optimization in analog networks through high level processes such as motion segmentation and selective attention; demonstrates network implementation in analog VLSI CMOS technology to provide computationally efficient devices; sets out measurements of final hardware implementation; illustrates the similarities of the presented circuits with the human visual motion perception system; includes an accompanying website with video clips of circuits under real-time visual conditions and additional supplementary material. With a complete review of all existing neuromorphic analog VLSI systems for visual motion sensing, Analog VLSI Circuits for the Perception of Visual Motion is a unique reference for advanced students in electrical engineering, artificial intelligence, robotics and computational neuroscience. It will also be useful for researchers, professionals, and electronics engineers working in the field.

Providing up-to-date material for UWB antennas and propagation as used in a wide variety of applications, «Ultra-wideband Antennas and Propagation for Communications, Radar and Imaging» includes fundamental theory, practical design information and extensive discussion of UWB applications from biomedical imaging, through to radar and wireless communications. An in-depth treatment of ultra-wideband signals in practical environments is given, including interference, coexistence and diversity considerations. The text includes antennas and propagation in biological media in addition to more conventional environments. The topics covered are approached with the aim of helping practising engineers to view the subject from a different angle, and to consider items as variables that were treated as constants in narrowband and wideband systems. Features tables of propagation data, photographs of antenna systems and graphs of results (e.g. radiation patterns, propagation characteristics) Covers the fundamentals of antennas and propagation, as well as offering an in-depth treatment of antenna elements and arrays for UWB systems, and UWB propagation models Provides a description of the underlying concepts for the design of antennas and arrays for conventional as well as ultra-wideband systems Draws together UWB theory by using case-studies to show applications of antennas and propagation in communication, radar and imaging systems The book highlights the unique design issues of using ultra-wideband and will serve both as an introductory text and a reference guide for designers and students alike.

This book provides thorough and specific guidance on how to prepare defense-related scientific and technical reports, including classified scientific and technical reports. It includes an appendix describing the workings of the Defense Technical Information Center, the central repository for defense-related scientific and technical reports, and an appendix addressing tone and style, including pertinent information from the United States Government Printing Office Style Manual 2000, the official style guide of the U.S. Government and, therefore, the Department of Defense. Every facet of preparing defense-related scientific and technical reports is addressed, thereby making it unnecessary for the user to have to refer to the standards and numerous regulations pertaining to this subject. In effect, the book provides «one-stop shopping» for the user. Also, some of the official guidance on preparing defense-related scientific and technical reports requires interpretation, and in those cases the book provides a prudent analysis of that information and prescribes a «best practices» course for the user.
