See on hinge minev, silmaringi avardav ja tänapäevalgi võimsana mõjuv lugu lakota teadmamehe Nicholas Black Elki (1863–1950) elust ja nägemustest ning tema siuu hõimu traagilisest saatusest Vana Lääne kangelaslikel lõpukümnenditel. 1930. aastal kohtus eakas Black Elk Lõuna-Dakotas oma sugulashinge, tuntud Ameerika luuletaja, kirjaniku ja kriitiku John G. Neihardtiga (1881–1973). Black Elk valis just Neihardti inimeseks, kes pidi tema suurt nägemust, elu ja maailmavaadet maailmale tutvustama. Black Elki sõnum on lihtne: maailm on üks, oma tähtis roll on selles nii loomadel, lindudel kui ka inimestel. See sõnum on aktuaalne ka tänapäeval.
