      1 6:1AND he departed thence, and came into his own country. And his disciples followed him. 6:2And when it was the sabbath, he taught in the synagogue; and many heard him and were astonished, and said, Whence has this man these things? and what is the wisdom given to him? And [what are] these mighty works done by his hands? 6:3Is not this the carpenter? the son of Mary? and a brother of James, and Joset, and Judas, and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended with him. 6:4And Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and with his relations, and in his own house. 6:5And he could not do any mighty work there, except that he laid hands on a few sick persons, and cured them. 6:6And he wondered at their unbelief. And he went about the villages in order, teaching.

      2 6:7And he called the twelve, and sent them out two and two, and gave them power over impure spirits; 6:8and charged them to take nothing for the way, except a staff only; not bread, nor a provision sack, nor copper in the girdle, 6:9but to wear sandals, and not to put on two coats. 6:10And he said to them, Where you enter into a house, there remain till you go out thence. 6:11And whatever place will not receive you, nor hear you, when you go out thence shake off the dust which is under your feet for a testimony to them. 6:12And going out, they preached that [men] should change their minds, 6:13and cast out many demons, and anointed many sick persons with oil, and cured them.

      3 6:14And Herod the king, heard [of Jesus], for his name was widely known, and said, John the Baptist has risen from the dead; and on this account the mighty works are performed by him. 6:15But others said, he is Elijah; and others said, He is a prophet, like one of the prophets. 6:16But Herod hearing of him, said, This is John whom I beheaded; he has been raised up. 6:17For Herod had sent and taken John, and, put him bound in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because he had married her. 6:18For John said to Herod, It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife. 6:19And Herodias was displeased with him, and wished to kill him, but was not able. 6:20For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he preserved him, and hearing him, did many things, and heard him gladly. 6:21And on a convenient day, when Herod made a supper in honor of his birthday, for his great men, and the chiliarchs, and the first men of Galilee, 6:22the daughter of this Herodias came in and danced, and pleased Herod, and those that reclined with him. And the king said to the girl, Ask me what you will and I will give it to you; 6:23and he swore to her, Whatever you shall ask of me I will give you, to half of my kingdom. 6:24And she went out and said to her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist. 6:25And coming in immediately with haste to the king, she asked, saying, I wish you to give me immediately on a plate the head of John the Baptist.

      4 6:26And the king was extremely sorry, but on account of the oaths, and those reclining with him, he was not willing to refuse her. 6:27And the king immediately sending an executioner, commanded him to bring his head. And he went out and beheaded him in the prison, 6:28and brought his head on a plate, and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. 6:29And his disciples hearing of it, came and took up his body, and laid it in a tomb.

      5 6:30And the apostles came together to Jesus and reported to him all things, both what they had done and what instructions they had given. 6:31And he said to them, Come to a solitary place by yourselves, and rest a little; for many were coming and going, and there was no convenient time to eat. 6:32And they went away to a solitary place in the ship by themselves. 6:33And many saw them going, and knew them; and they ran together there from all the cities on foot, and went before them. 6:34And going out he saw a great multitude, and had compassion on them, for they were as sheep not having a shepherd; and he taught them much.

      6 6:35And when much time had already passed, his disciples came to him and said, This is a solitary place, and much time has already passed; 6:36dismiss them, that they may go to the farms and villages around, and buy them something to eat. 6:37And he answered and said to them, Give them something to eat. And they said to him, Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii [$28] worth of bread, and give them to eat? 6:38And he said to them, How many loaves have you? go and see. And knowing, they said, Five, and two fishes. 6:39And he commanded them to cause all to recline in companies on the green grass. 6:40And they sat down in squares, by hundreds and by fifties. 6:41And taking the five loaves and two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them. And he divided the two fishes to all. 6:42And they all eat, and were filled; 6:43and they took up of fragments twelve traveling-baskets full, and of the fishes. 6:44And they that eat the bread were five thousand men.

      7 6:45And he immediately constrained his disciples to go into the ship, and to go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the multitude; 6:46and having dismissed them, he went away to the mountain to pray. 6:47And when it was evening, the ship was in the midst of the lake, and he alone on the land. 6:48And seeing them troubled to proceed, for the wind was against them, about the fourth watch of the night he came to them walking on the lake, and wished to pass by them. 6:49And seeing him walking on the lake, they thought it was an apparition, and cried out, 6:50for they all saw and were troubled. And immediately he spoke with them, and said to them, Be of good courage; it is I; be not afraid. 6:51And he went up to them into the ship, and the wind ceased, and they were astonished in themselves above measure, and wondered; 6:52for they understood not concerning the bread, for their heart was hardened.

      8 6:53And crossing over they came to the land of Gennesaret, and came to anchor. 6:54And going out of the ship, they immediately knew him, 6:55and ran about through that whole country, and brought those that were sick on beds where they heard that he was. 6:56And wherever he went, in villages, or cities, or country places, they placed the sick in the markets, and besought him that they might touch the fringe of his garment, and as many as touched him were cured.

      1 7:1AND the Pharisees and some of the scribes having come from Jerusalem came together to him, 7:2and seeing some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is, unwashed hands, [they found fault]. 7:3For the Pharisees and all the Jews eat not unless they wash their hands with the fist, holding the tradition of the elders. 7:4And from a market, unless they baptize they eat not; and there are many other [customs] which they have received to hold; baptisms, of cups and sextuses [1 1–2 pint measures], and brass vessels, and beds. 7:5And the Pharisees and scribes asked, Why do not your disciples conform to the tradition of the elders; but eat bread with defiled hands?

      2 7:6And he said to them, Well did Isaiah prophecy of you, hypocrites, as it is written; This people honors me with the lips, but their heart is far from me; 7:7but
