In Christian Human Rights , Samuel Moyn asserts that the rise of human rights after World War II was prefigured and inspired by a defense of the dignity of the human person that first arose in Christian churches and religious thought in the years just prior to the outbreak of the war. The Roman Catholic Church and transatlantic Protestant circles dominated the public discussion of the new principles in what became the last European golden age for the Christian faith. At the same time, West European governments after World War II, particularly in the ascendant Christian Democratic parties, became more tolerant of public expressions of religious piety. Human rights rose to public prominence in the space opened up by these dual developments of the early Cold War. Moyn argues that human dignity became central to Christian political discourse as early as 1937. Pius XII's wartime Christmas addresses announced the basic idea of universal human rights as a principle of world, and not merely state, order. By focusing on the 1930s and 1940s, Moyn demonstrates how the language of human rights was separated from the secular heritage of the French Revolution and put to use by postwar democracies governed by Christian parties, which reinvented them to impose moral constraints on individuals, support conservative family structures, and preserve existing social hierarchies. The book ends with a provocative chapter that traces contemporary European struggles to assimilate Muslim immigrants to the continent's legacy of Christian human rights.

Florence Nightingale is best known as the founder of modern nursing, a reformer in the field of public health, and a pioneer in the use of statistics. It is not generally known, however, that Nightingale was at the forefront of the religious, philosophical, and scientific though of her time. In a three-volume work that was never published, Nightingale presented her radical spiritual views, motivated by the desire to give those who had turned away from conventional religion an alternative to atheism. In this volume Michael D. Calabria and Janet A. Macrae provide the essence of Nightingale's spiritual philosophy by selecting and reorganizing her best-written treatments. The editors have also provided an introduction and commentary to set the work into a biographical, historical, and philosophical context. This volume illuminates a little-known dimension of Nightingale's personality, bringing forth the ideas that served as the guiding principles of her work. It is also an historical document, presenting the religious issues that were fiercely debated in the second half of the nineteenth century. In Suggestions for Thought , one has the opportunity to experience a great practical mind as it grapples with the most profound questions of human existence.

Taking the reader into the heart of one of the fastest-growing religious movements in North America, Sabina Magliocco reveals how the disciplines of anthropology and folklore were fundamental to the early development of Neo-Paganism and the revival of witchcraft. Magliocco examines the roots that this religious movement has in a Western spiritual tradition of mysticism disavowed by the Enlightenment. She explores, too, how modern Pagans and Witches are imaginatively reclaiming discarded practices and beliefs to create religions more in keeping with their personal experience of the world as sacred and filled with meaning. Neo-Pagan religions focus on experience, rather than belief, and many contemporary practitioners have had mystical experiences. They seek a context that normalizes them and creates in them new spiritual dimensions that involve change in ordinary consciousness. Magliocco analyzes magical practices and rituals of Neo-Paganism as art forms that reanimate the cosmos and stimulate the imagination of its practitioners. She discusses rituals that are put together using materials from a variety of cultural and historical sources, and examines the cultural politics surrounding the movement—how the Neo-Pagan movement creates identity by contrasting itself against the dominant culture and how it can be understood in the context of early twenty-first-century identity politics. Witching Culture is the first ethnography of this religious movement to focus specifically on the role of anthropology and folklore in its formation, on experiences that are central to its practice, and on what it reveals about identity and belief in twenty-first-century North America.

Assisting others in the process of leadership development comes in many forms. In recent years, coaching has continued to grow as a popular way to accomplish this, which has catalyzed the emergence of different models. What follows is the exploration of one such model that Dr. Breedlove terms discipleship style coaching (DSC). The DSC model is a distinctly Christian model of coaching that intentionally embraces the principles of Christian discipleship and blends them with the best coaching methodologies. This blending of coaching and discipleship is intended to help both professional and amateur Christian coaches as they seek to advance a culture of coaching in the many organizations in which they have influence. One of the most unique aspects of the DSC model is how it can help leaders at all levels cross the ever-increasing divide between the secular and the sacred in order to bring the principles of the kingdom of God into the places where Christians live, work, and play. Using both scholarly research and relevant examples, the author unpacks how the DSC model can be used to transform individuals, organizations, and ultimately whole communities.

The Bible says that God met with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, walking and talking with them each day as friends. It was natural conversation flowing easily between God and His creation. But in this garden, we also find Satan casting his shadows of doubt upon man’s heart; the same shadows of doubt that still plague our minds today that leave us wondering: Did God really speak to me? Can I really know Him as friend? If you are tired of living under these dark shadows of doubt, then it’s time to step into the glorious light of communion with God through Spirit-directed prayer journaling. Through sharing some of her most meaningful conversations with God, Amber Desiree Dunleavey will stir your heart to be more aware of God’s voice, to be confident in conversational prayer, and to deepen communion with Him through your own journey of listening to His voice through journaling.

From his fraternity days, through forty years of medical practice, this book is a tapestry of events woven and bonded by the heart and soul of the Haitian people; who became a part of, not just his story, but also many others. An often-overlooked country, Haiti is home to a people that show core values of trust, faith, respect, and caring every day. Those same values are shared in equal measure by his fellow travelers. Each came to serve and share their time and talents and instead had their lives transformed by an unexpected chance to be served. Through these stories, you may, in some measure, experience how those who are poor and seem the least of us, have hearts that can change the world.
