William Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) is best known as the innovator of the English detective novel, whose sensational novels, plays, and short stories were hugely popular in the Victorian Era. Today, readers enjoy Collins' intricate and suspenseful plots, and his penetrating social commentary on the plight of women and domestic issues of the time. «No Name», one of Collins' best-known works, takes place at Combe-Raven in West Somersetshire in 1846. Sisters Norah and Magdalen Vanstone lose their father and mother abruptly, and it is quickly revealed that the two were born out of wedlock. This illegitimacy in the eyes of the English court deprives them of their inheritance, a turn of events which Norah resigns to gracefully, but headstrong Magdelen is unable to accept. The social commentary novel shifts dramatically to revenge thriller as Magdelen seeks retribution for the injustice she has suffered.

Today, readers enjoy Collins' intricate and suspenseful plots, and his penetrating social commentary on the plight of women and domestic issues of the time. Unfortunately Collins suffered from rheumatic gout, for which he took the opiate laudanum, and which eventually led to paranoid delusions and the deterioration of his health. Basil was Collins' second novel, published in 1852, and touches on themes frequently found in Collins' work: marriage between differing social classes, betrayal, revenge and insanity. «Basil», a man of high station, falls in love with Margaret Sherwin, the daughter of a linen draper, and the year following their secret marriage is fraught with dramatic conflict. This psychologically penetrating story of love and loss is recognized today as one of, if not the, first sensation novels of the nineteenth century.

Collins was writing «A Rogue's Life» during a stay in Paris, where he spent time with Charles Dickens, and said his «leisure hours were joyously passed with many other friends.» The result is a playful, heroic tale that is a quick and joyfully entertaining read. The story was popular in its original periodical form, and was later revised and republished as a complete novel in 1879.

First published serially between 1859 and 1860, “The Woman in White” is Wilkie Collins’s epistolary novel that tells the tale of Walter Hartright, who encounters a woman all dressed in white on a moonlit road in Hampstead. Hartright helps the woman to find her way back to London. The woman warns him against an unnamed baronet and after they part he discovers that she may have escaped from an insane asylum. Hartright travels to Cumberland where he takes up a position as the art tutor of Laura Fairlie and her devoted half-sister, Marian Halcombe, who are somehow entangled with this mysterious “woman in white”. Wilkie Collins’s fifth published novel, “The Woman in White” is considered one of the earliest examples of the mystery genre, an early work of detective fiction, and one of the finest examples of sensationalist literature. While the novel was a commercial success when first published it was harshly reviewed by critics of the age. Since that time it has come to be regarded as a groundbreaking work of the mystery genre, one of Collins’s best. This edition includes a biographical afterword.
