Tom Jones or, The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling is a comic novel by English playwright and novelist Henry Fielding. It is both a Bildungsroman and a picaresque novel. It was first published on 28 February 1749 in London, and is among the earliest English prose works to be classified as a novel. It is the earliest novel mentioned by W. Somerset Maugham in his 1948 book Great Novelists and Their Novels among the ten best novels of the world. The novel is highly organized, despite its length. Samuel Taylor Coleridge argued that it has one of the «three most perfect plots ever planned.» Tom Jones is generally regarded as Fielding's greatest book and as a very influential English novel.

The first novel of English magistrate Henry Fielding, «Joseph Andrews» was written in 1742 as a complete extension of the author's pamphlet «Shamela.» The latter contains an impressively coarse parody of «Pamela,» the Samuel Richardson novel that rewards a servant girl with marriage for protecting her virtue. Shamela, however, utilizes a coy and artificial modesty to procure for herself a husband of wealth. Fielding went on to write «Joseph Andrews,» a work relating the adventures of a footboy after he is dismissed from his employment. He rejects the advances of the lady of the house, and his life after losing his position begins a journey filled with crime, poverty, and varying types of maliciousness, as well as uplifting comedy and love in many forms. This experimental novel, however, grows out of its original parody, for it objects as much to the mechanics as of the limited ideas of the literature of its day. «Joseph Andrews» not only reveals the corruption of Fielding's contemporary society, but it does so in a prose fiction that is as sophisticated as it is satirical.

Widely considered to be one of the first true English novels, Fielding's «Tom Jones,» written in 1749, revolves around the life and experiences of an orphaned baby who grows up to be a kind-hearted, if overly vigorous, young man. Tom is brought up by the generous Mr. Allworthy on his Somerset estate, where Tom eventually falls in love with his beautiful neighbor, Sophia Western. Because of his partially unknown parentage, however, their respective guardians are against the match. When Tom is banished due to his occasionally heated temper and sexual encounters with local girls, he has an adventure full of danger and surprise, and he ultimately follows Sophia to London, who herself flees from an undesirable arranged marriage. Generally acknowledged as Fielding's greatest work, «Tom Jones» takes the hero through an inventive plot that will entertain and astonish readers to the revealing conclusion.

Joseph Andrews refuses Lady Booby's advances, she discharges him, and Joseph — in the company of his old tutor, Parson Adams (one of the great comic figures of literature) — sets out from London to visit his sweetheart, Fanny. Along the way, the two travelers meet with a series of adventures — some hilarious, some heartstopping — in which through their own innocence and honesty they expose the hypocrisy and affectation of others. Joseph Andrews started out as a parody of Richardson's Pamela, but soon left that purpose behind and now is regarded as the first English realistic novel.
