Hace alusión a cierta estirpe de hombres que también arribaron a los Mares del Sur, no con el propósito de encontrar fortuna mediante el comercio de perlas o de negros, sino para promover sus ideas religiosas. «Ustedes están interesados en ganar dinero y yo en salvar almas», como afirma John Starhurst, el protagonista, un misionero que intenta convertir al cristianismo a nativos caracterizados por su propensión al canibalismo. Se emparenta con otra narración por el estilo, «El ídolo rojo», donde un naturalista blanco se enfrenta a los deseos de un reductor de cabezas que quiere convertirlo en lotu y hacerle kaikai, es decir, matarlo y comerlo. Al igual que en esta historia, en «El diente de ballena» se narra la creciente tensión entre las creencias de uno y otro bando. El diálogo que se establece entre Starhurst y Mongondro acerca del origen del mundo es sintomático de esta tensión, que al final se resolverá con una lucha perdida de antemano entre las armas que utiliza el misionero, la Verdad y la Justicia, y la maza de guerra que empuña el Buli de Gatoka.

Ha sido llevado a Haití junto con otros quinientos connacionales para trabajar por un sueldo miserable, una especie de «condena por ser frágiles y humanos». Ah Cho es callado y circunspecto.
