Their children are like the children of Indians or of apes, always in rags and tatters. You will never find one that is not caked in dung and straw, sleeping in the feeding trough and drinking from the kneading bowl. His food is dung cakes and he plays among the calves. He pisses and shits in his clothes and is always covered in filth and grime. His life is spent in befoulment, and his mother’s in defilement. As he scuttles around his quarter, all he knows how to do is blow the pipes and beat the drums, chase around after the ox and the bull, and make a mess of himself in the dung and the mire. He never puts on a shift, and his life is spent in vexation. Of all cleanliness free, naught but a country clod is he.

(وأمّا نساؤهم عند الجماع) * فإنّهن في حكم الضباع * يدخلن الأفران * ويُضْرِموا فيها النيران * ويَعْبَقُ عليهم الدخان * وتظهر لهم روائح الدِمْس * حتّى يصيروا كأنّهم في قَلْس * ثمّ ينضجعوا إلى شيء من القَشّ * وما يتيسّر من القصالة والعَفْش * بعد أكلهم المدمَّس والبيسار * حتّى يصير الشخص منهم كأنّه حمار * ثمّ يضمّ زوجته إليه * وهي تتشقلب عليه * فيظهر من بين الاثنين * روائح الجلّة والطين * وتعطيه رجليها * وينظر إلى عَمْشة عينيها * ويطرحها على جنبها * فتستغيث بربّها * وتقول أحَّيْه جتك داهيه أحَّيْه جتك مصيبه أحَّيْه جتك غاره فغنجها بليّه * وجماعها رزيّه * وربما جامع الشخص منهم زوجته في مدود الحماره * أو في الغيط جنب العبّاره * وقد تمكث المرأة منهنّ الجمعه * لا تغسل من الجنابة لمعه * وكذلك الرجل بتحقيق * في أعظم الدناسة وعدم التوفيق *
Their women during intercourse are like hyenas. They go into the ovens and set the fires burning, so that the smoke clings to them and the odors of the ashes on them cannot be ignored, till they are as though steeped in vomit. Then the two of them lie down on a bit of straw and some shucks and sweepings, after eating stewed fava beans and bīsār, till both are indistinguishable from donkeys. The man now clasps his wife to his breast and she flips over onto his chest, and from between them emerge odors of dung and earth. She gives him her legs and he gazes into her rheumy eyes and throws her on her side, while she calls on her Lord for aid, saying, “Aḥḥēḥ!61 Disaster befall you! Aḥḥēḥ! Calamity strike you! Aḥḥēḥ! A raiding party take you!” Thus her cries when in heat are a pain, and coition with her is a bane. Sometimes a man will have intercourse with his wife in the donkey’s trough or in the field next the path and the woman may go for a week without washing off the traces of her impurity,62 while the man likewise assuredly persists in the worst possible state of filth and futility.

(وأمّا أعراسهم) فإنّها مثل قيام الغارات * أو تعفير الكلاب في الحارات * يدوروا بالعريس دَوْره * وهم في غارة أو غَوْره * وعائط وصرخات * ودواهي وبليّات * وزعيق وعفره * وصياح وغبره * والكلاب تنبح * والشعراء تمدح * والطبل يضرب * والمشاة حوله تلعب * والجدعان تخبط بالنبابيت * والأولاد تنطّ بالشراميط * وربما كانوا في هزل صاروا في جدّ وربما هشموا بعضهم البعض وقد يموت الواحد منهم والاثنين * ويحصل من ذلك الفرح الهمّ والشَيْن * وتخرب من فعلهم البلد * ويزيد الهمّ والنكد *
Their weddings are like raiding parties at their setting off or dogs fighting and kicking up dust in the lanes. They make a circuit of the village with the groom, making a hubbub and a hullaballoo, shouting and screaming, creating disasters and calamities, shrieking and kicking up the dust and yelling and making a mess, while the dogs bark, the bards sing the praises of the Prophet, the drums beat, the foot soldiers play around the groom, the brave lads bash one another with their staves, and the children leap around in their rags. Often what started in jest ends in earnest, with the breaking of one another’s bones and one or two of them maybe dying, so that the celebration ends in woe and shame, the village is ruined by their doings, and woe and misery increase.

ثمّ بعد هذه الدوره * يفرشوا للعريس جنب الجوره * ويُجْلِسوه على نَخّ أو حصير * أو تُرْس من أتراس البير * ويأتوا له بالعروس * كأنّها فحل جاموس * منقَّشة بالحِبْر والهِباب * وقدّامها الشاعر بالرَباب * وخلفها الصبايا بالزغاريط تصيح * والجدعان تمشي بالمصابيح * ويَرُشّوا عليها الملح خَوْفَ النَظْره * وقد خلبطوا وجهها وهذا من أقبح أفعالهم * وأتعس أحوالهم * إذ لا يجوز هذا في الشرع * ولا يقول به أصل ولا فرع * ثمّ إنّهم يُجْلِسوها على شيء عالي * ويأتي إليها الكبالي * ويُنْشِدوها الأشعار * ممّا هو مناسب لها باعتبار [رمل]
| يَا عَرُوسَهْ يَا ٱمَّ غَالِي | اِنْجَلِي وَلَا تُبَالِي |
| اِنْجَلِي يَا وَجْهَ بُومَهْ | زَاعِقَهْ وَسْطَ ٱللَّيَالِي |
| وَجْهُكِي بِالنَّقْشِ يُشْبِهْ |
وَجْهَ ضَبْعَهْ فِي ٱلرِّمَالِ
