you will need to have a good understanding of the basic principles of hypnosis. This chapter serves as a basic overview of hypnosis so that you understand how it works and why it is so effective.

      When it comes to hypnosis, there are two main types.

      Hetero hypnosis is the name given to when one person hypnotizes another. It can be one on one or in a group setting, such as you would see during a stage show.

      Covert hypnosis is a very advanced type of hetero hypnosis. Self-hypnosis is the term given to when you put yourself in a meditative state and then repeat affirmations to yourself.

      The idea behind this is that when you focus on these affirmations with your conscious mind that they will eventually sink down into your subconscious mind, and therefore give you the desire change that you desire in yourself.

      Covert hypnotism includes subliminal suggestions. We mentioned how advertisers will use subliminal messages in advertising but you can do the same thing when speaking to people one on one.

      Leaders, debaters, politicians and anybody who has ever been called charismatic has likely used subliminal suggestions in order to sway people to their cause.

      The power of suggestion is mighty instead. When used by the wrong people, it can be dangerous. People look at cult leaders and wonder why people flock to something that is so obviously not healthy but the answer can be found in covert hypnotism.

      When used correctly, it is an effective tool to be used positively. Preachers use it to help engage their parishioners.

      Motivational speakers use it to instantly connect to a large crowd and to get them stirred up and listening.

      Politicians and leaders use it for the same reason, it makes them endearing to people, even when delivering a message that can be negative.

      Anybody can make use of it, from car salesmen to coaches. If you need to inspire, to connect or to influence, you need to have a firm grasp of covert hypnosis.

      Even if you are not a salesmen, you will be able to pitch business ideas, run meetings, or pitch proposals with ease, and with success.

      So how exactly does hypnosis work? It helps to consider our mind to be in layers. The top layer is the conscious mind.

      Our conscious mind is the thinking that we are aware of. It is our active thinking layer, it is what is responsible all of the thoughts that we are aware of.

      The second layer, the subconscious mind is what is just beneath the conscious mind. It is the larger part of our minds. Everything that we experience gets filed away in our subconscious mind.

      Our personality is formed by our subconscious. Anything that we have learned is stored in our subconscious.

      Thoughts come up from the subconscious and pass into our conscious thinking. For example, you might see a person that reminds you of somebody but you cannot remember whom and it falls out of our active thinking.

      However, your subconscious is still thinking about it and in a few hours, the name of who that person reminds you of will suddenly pop into your head. That is only one example of how the conscious and the subconscious are linked.

      Because all of our emotions, experiences, learning, and personality are rooted in our subconscious, when you change your subconscious, you can change your conscious thinking as a result.

      This is why hypnosis is so great for helping people make changes to themselves for the better. Hypnosis is a way to bypass the conscious thinking to get to the subconscious.

      When you bypass the conscious to get to the subconscious, you can then implant suggestions, or just be more subtly persuasive to get the desired results.

      You may have bypassed the conscious, but the subconscious is still very much aware of the subject’s morals and beliefs and it will reject suggestions that go against those.

      The subconscious will often act upon any thoughts and suggestions that do not go against the subject’s belief system and that is how covert hypnosis helps.

      You have probably run across people using this method of covert hypnosis at your local fair; we are talking about product demonstrators.

      These are people who make their living selling you products that you probably neither need nor want. However, it is common to stop to watch a demonstration, with no intent of buying anything only to walk away with that product.

      So how did you go from not wanting that product to buying one? Simple, they were able to suggest to your subconscious that you needed that product and because the suggestion does not go against your morals or beliefs, you followed the suggestion and bought the product.

      The goal of this book is to allow you to persuade people with that same degree of success. Rapport is a big part of hypnotism and NLP both; it all has to do with trust.

      If somebody that you did not like tried to sell you something, you would most likely just walk away. However, if somebody you trust tries to sell you something, you are more apt to listen and possibly buy the product.

      Covert hypnosis allows you to establish that rapport, making you a person that they trust, even though they have just met you!
