While I encourage you to read every section, the answers to the questions below will help you fine-tune your focus.

      Setting the Foundation

      It all starts with knowing where you want to go and why…

      1.Do you know what you want out of life?

      a. No idea.

      b. I have thought about it.

      c. I have a good idea.

      d. There are a few things I want.

      e. I know exactly what I want.

      2.Do you have a reason that impels you to do whatever it takes to get what you want?

      a. No.

      b. I think so.

      c. I have a reason, but it doesn’t impel me to do everything.

      d. Yes.

      e. Yes, there is nothing that will stop me.

      3.Do you have an idea in which field you intend to work?

      a. I have no idea.

      b. I have thought about it.

      c. I have a few jobs/careers I am looking into.

      d. I have narrowed it down to 2-3.

      e. I know exactly what I want to do in life.

      4.Have you identified what steps you need to take to get to your dream job?

      a. What do you mean?

      b. No.

      c. I have an idea.

      d. I have a general plan.

      e. I know exactly what I need to do.

      5.Do you know why you want to go into a certain career?

      a. No.

      b. Not really.

      c. Yes, I have a general idea.

      d. Yes, I am clear on my reasons for choosing

       my career.

      e. Yes, and my reasons are why I will do whatever

       it takes.

      6.Do you write goals for yourself?

      a. No.

      b. I have a few in my head.

      Are you constantly reminded of your goals daily?

      Education

      I was told education is about teaching people how to think. I had to bump my head a few times to see what that meant. Here are some questions to better assess where you are concerning your education.

      1.Is your institution or school’s department the right environment for you to develop?

      a. I am not in school.

      b. I go just to get my degree.

      c. It has my major.

      d. Yes, it is one of the best schools for my field.

      e. Yes, my department, people, and opportunities

       fit me perfectly.

      2.Are your passions, interests, or strengths the main factor in your choice of a major?

      a. No.

      b. I am doing it for the money or because some else

       said it is a good idea.

      c. Sort of… It is interesting.

      d. I think I will enjoy it.

      e. I LOVE MY MAJOR! THIS IS WHAT I WAS

       BORN TO DO!

      3.Are you taking classes that will prepare you for the industry in which you plan to work?

      a. No.

      b. I believe that is why my advisor picked

       my classes.

      c. I think so.

      d. Duh! That is the point of college, right?

      e. Yes, my classes align with career goals.

      4.Outside of your requirements for graduation, are you taking classes that you enjoy?

      a. I am not in school.

      b. My classes are boring.

      c. My classes are okay.

      d. I am somewhat interested in them.

      e. I love my classes.

      5.Do you maintain a 3.3 or higher GPA?

      a. Uh, no. Less than a 3.0

      b. 3.0 - 3.3

      c. 3.3 - 3.5

      6.Are you implementing a system to manage your time?

      a. No.

      b. I know the important things I have to do.

      c. I usually have an idea of what I need to do.

      d. I use an agenda and make to-do lists when I

       need to.

      e. I write down my tasks and use an agenda daily.

      7.How would you describe how you organize yourself for class?

      a. What do you mean?

      b. I know where everything is.

      c. I try to stay organized.

      d. I have a folder for each class.

      e. I keep my notes, handouts, assignments, and

       anything else related to class in place and ready.

      Experience

      Books alone will not do, so…

      1.Are you in, or planning to be on, the executive board of an organization?

      a. I don’t do stuff like that.

      d. If that is what it takes to get ahead.

      2.Are you involved in a club that will prepare you for your career?
