lymphatic and venous systems, situated at the base of the neck.

You could think of lymph as a kind of internal irrigation system draining wastes from the tissues. At night, when this drainage system slows down, fluid builds up in the tissues. That’s why your face can appear puffy first thing in the morning. Lack of physical exercise during the day also slows the flow of lymph. But that’s not the only thing to watch out for – poor diet, pollution, and shallow breathing can all restrict lymphatic drainage.

One of the most important functions of lymph is its part in the body’s defences. At intervals, the lymphatics empty into chambers called lymph nodes where the lymph is filtered and bacteria and other invading organisms are trapped and inactivated by white blood cells, or leukocytes, of the immune system. There are various kinds of leukocytes; some, such as the small lymphocytes, produce antibodies to destroy bacteria and viruses, while others are phagocytic cells that engulf and destroy foreign particles and organisms. Lymph must pass through at least two nodes before it is totally cleansed and can return to the bloodstream. If the lymph system gets overloaded you can see the effect in the condition of your skin, such as the appearance of spots, blackheads, and dry patches. While these problems can be treated easily, they needn’t occur in the first place.

      ancient wisdom

In Ayurveda, the lymphatic network is known as the kapha, or mucus-carrying, system. Thousands of years ago, Ayurvedic doctors developed a massage technique that included the manipulation of pressure points to balance the body’s energy pathways. They thought that increasing kapha activity would improve the flow of nourishment to the bodily organs, aiding the movement of joints, and boosting patience, solidarity, stamina, and determination. When you look at the pressure points with a Western eye you’ll notice that they correspond well with the position of the lymph nodes! How wise our ancestors were!

      Iymph and face lift massage

Face lift massage is a system that draws on much of the knowledge of the ancients. It involves massage and the application of pressure to certain points on the body to boost the drainage of lymph. Lymph can take time to thoroughly cleanse itself. In the meantime, the excess fluid under the skin and the build-up of toxins can be seen on the face, leaving it looking saggy, dull, gray, and puffy. Massaging the facial tissues helps to speed up lymph drainage and ensures that the vessels are cleansed of waste products that have not been removed naturally. There are important lymph nodes in the armpits, groin, and the back of the knees, but many nodes are in the neck, and by unblocking these you’ll soon see a difference in your face.
