As artists not uncommonly keep sketchbooks, so thinkers often write notebooks. Schubert Ogden is a thinker for whom writing notebooks has been an essential discipline throughout his long career of trying to think as a Christian systematic theologian. By his own confession, constantly writing down his thoughts so he could discover what he wanted to think has always been as necessary to learning how to think theologically as constantly reading in order to think fruitfully with the minds of others. This volume is a selection from the indefinitely larger corpus of Ogden's notebooks now archived in the Drew University Library. All arising from his thinking as a theologian, the entries selected are addressed to some of the more fundamental, and therefore mainly philosophical, issues now facing anyone who would do Christian theology systematically. While each entry stands on its own and may well be read discretely, they together make up a single many-sided argument for a distinctive way of doing theology today by resolutely pursuing a comparably distinctive way of doing metaphysics and ethics.

God's Saved Israel examines identity in the Pauline corpus in terms of how Paul expresses the new identity in Christ in relation to the identity of ancient Israel. In this study, the way in which Paul uses the terms «Israel,» «Israelite,» and «Judean» is approached on the basis of the way in which these terms were used in the second temple period by both insiders and outsiders, rather than presupposing that Paul used it in a different way. By thoroughly engaging with the New Perspective on Paul and the Radical New Perspective on Paul, Paul's conception of identity is pursued mainly along theological-exegetical lines, especially in terms of the contrast between flesh and S/spirit. While Rom 11:26, which points to «all Israel» that «will be saved,» and Gal 6:16, which points to «the Israel of God» who are blessed, are often utilized in a paradigmatic way to interpret the rest of Paul, the approach in this book is the other way around. These two texts are approached by first assessing Paul's conception of identity in the whole of the Pauline corpus and then by interpreting Rom 11:26 and Gal 6:16 with a larger understanding of identity in Paul at hand.

The Doctrine of the Eons: God's Immutable Plan is an account of how God will bring about the salvation and reconciliation of all mankind. Each chapter provides a theological account of how this will be accomplished, including dispelling common myths about God and focusing on the meaning of the word «immutable.» This leads to a discussion of the Hebrew and Greek definitions of «eon» and «eternal,» and we discover that neither the Old nor the New Testament uses the word «eternal.» «Eternal» tends to refer to an indefinite amount of time, whereas «eon» is more definite; the latter term is primarily used when the Bible talks about the end-times. Finally, the doctrine of universal salvation is presented, arguing that God will have all men be saved and that he will eventually reconcile all creation.

Tesfaye Gabbiso, prominent Ethiopian soloist, began composing song texts and tunes as a young lad in the early 1970s during a period of social and political upheaval in Ethiopia. This national ferment strengthened a creative surge among a generation of youth as the Ethiopian revolution (1974-91) was taking hold. An explosion of indigenous spiritual songs was one result. The indigenous song style was in contrast to the imported and translated European hymnody that had earlier been sung in Ethiopia's evangelical churches. Because of his testimony, both in life and song, Tesfaye was imprisoned for seven years during the revolution, during which time he continued to compose and sing. Thus, his songs reflect suffering, endurance, and hope in the «Babylons, Meantime, and Zions» of life experience. The human voice in song, rooted in the flow of the missio Dei, is perhaps the greatest testimony that may be lived out, whether in a prison cell or in the larger complex world. A special feature of this book is the inclusion of 104 of Tesfaye's songs (Cassettes 1-7) in English translation. This study is valuable as a cross-cultural textbook, offers rich lyrics, and embodies a challenge to Christian commitment in the arts.

What does it mean to be Asian American? Should Asian American identity be construed primarily in cultural terms or racial terms? And why should contemporary theology care about such questions? Disciplined by Race: Theological Ethics and the Problem of Asian American Identity reveals the critical importance of Asian American experience for contemporary theological debates on race. The book challenges readers to move beyond conventional perceptions of Asian Americans as model minorities and to confront the ways in which Asian Americans are socially restrained by whiteness. Rather than being insulated from the logics of white racism in the modern United States, being Asian American is tragically defined by those logics. Coming to grips with how Asian Americans are disciplined by race reveals the prospects for Asian American self-determination and raises the question of whether resistance to the social demands and allure of whiteness is realistically possible, for Asian Americans and non-Asian Americans alike.

In Paul's angry letter, everything is magnified. His obstructers have insidious motives, their Galatian victims are dense and on the brink of spiritual peril, and the law itself is outmoded and a malevolent taskmaster. How do we read beneath the rhetoric? Writing on the Edge surveys ancient Greco-Roman and modern linguistic sources on hyperbole and demonstrates that it is possible to separate out the effect of Paul's edgy rhetoric on his ideas. Eleven criteria are applied to identify Paul's most hyperbolic passages in Galatians, followed by a reinterpretation of those passages and the entire thrust of the letter. Paul's true attitudes emerge, and a more consistent picture of the apostle materializes, one in line with his Torah-observant behavior in Acts.

The story of the raped and murdered woman of Judges 19 and the civil war and mass marriage that ensue in chapters 20-21 are hardly favorite tales of the Hebrew Bible. The chapters have often been dismissed as little more than an anachronistic epilogue, an awkward amalgamation of earlier stories or a «text of terror,» proof of patriarchal oppression. This book argues that, far from being a clumsy collage, Judges 19-21 is a carefully narrated tale that chronicles the descent of a nation into extreme individualism and fragmentation. In dialogue with continental philosopher Luce Irigaray, it will uncover the dynamics of identity formation and how differential constructions of identity of the One and the Other yield patterns of victimization and justification of violence. This literary-philosophical reading will bring out silences and missed possibilities for the subjectivity of women, whilst also shedding light on the victimization of men within the logic of totalitarian identity constructions. The end of Judges therefore offers a theological conclusion to the book as a whole and opens up avenues for thought on theological anthropology, understandings of identity and gender, and a theological commentary on violence.

Transmitting the Spirit in Missions: The History and Growth of the Church of Pentecost discourses on how Pentecostalism in general has been involved in the current growth, mission, and changing face of global Christianity. It argues that African Pentecostals particularly are an integral part of the global expansion of Christianity in this century. Specifically, this book engages the history and growth of the Church of Pentecost, an African Pentecostal denomination from Ghana, to demonstrate how African Pentecostals have taken their spirituality into their own hands and planted churches in their home country, as well as other parts of the globe. The focus of this book is that African Pentecostals have achieved this feat through the experiential power and reliance of the Holy Spirit and the indigenous factor. The specific highlight is that this book is an updated analysis of the history, growth, and missions of the Church of Pentecost. Although this work is transformed from a PhD thesis, the content is presented accessibly to both the academia and general church populace, both pastors and the laity.
