A classic Chinese text dating from the 6th century B.C., the «Book of the Way» consists of 81 short poems that unfold the spiritual nature of Taoism, one of the ancient Chinese religions. In describing the universal life force implicit in all things, this work shows readers a path that teaches contentment and balance. The simple language of Lao Tzu's manual on the art of living essentially encourages being humble, temperate, and considerate in the face of life's predicaments. The wisdom of being a part of the Tao leads to a serenity of spirit that improves all aspects of human life, from work to family, difficulties and joys. An essential for the meditation of Taoists for thousands of years, the «Tao Te Ching» is as beneficial and informative as it is enduring. This edition is drawn from the authoritative translation of James Legge and is interspersed with detailed critical analysis by the translator.

"Revelations of Divine Love" is a text of Julian of Norwich's dream visions that she had when she was near death. Then, after being miraculously healed, Julian of Norwich dedicated the rest of her life to writing her series of sixteen visions for all to read and understand. During her life, Norwich had suffered through three different bouts of the Black Death. Julian of Norwich remained optimistic in her faith, though; she denied that the plagues were God's punishment on the wicked. Instead, she believed that God was incapable of punishment. In her eyes, every person was worthy of God's salvation, and Hell was not a place of banishment and torture. She thought that God's true intentions of Hell were yet to be discovered. In «Revelations of Divine Love,» Julian of Norwich extrapolates on her beliefs and describes the visions she received about the Passion of the Christ as well as the Virgin Mary. In addition to being a truly inspiring work, it is also hailed as the first book written in English by a woman. Regardless if it is read for its historical significance or its religious message, «Revelations of Divine Love» is a truly inspiring text of Christian Mysticism.

Written over the course of 40 years following a pivotal healing experience in 1867, «Science and Health» is the result of extensive Biblical study by Mary Baker Eddy. This woman, who discovered Christian Science in 1866 and felt inspired to write her book soon after, poses in her work an entirely metaphysical view of Christianity. Eddy conceives of sin, sickness, and death as not of God, and hence not real. She strives to assert that reaching for a spiritual comprehension of the world, one that is God's perfect handiwork, will allow one to discard those beliefs that are unreal. «Science and Health» has carried its message of hope and comfort, healing and strength to millions of readers for well over 100 years, helping countless people find balance and deeper meaning in their lives.

A poet, novelist, pacifist and mystic, Evelyn Underhill (1875-1941) spent her life deeply immersed in the things she wrote about. At first an agnostic, Underhill became drawn to Catholicism, though her husband, a Protestant, tried to dissuade her. Instead of taking the traditional Christocentric view held by most Anglo-Catholics, Underhill gravitated toward a more intellectual side of religion. With her work «Practical Mysticism», Underhill expounds on her views of spirituality from a secular standpoint, arguing that spiritual life is innate in all humans, a part of human nature, and that all of life is sacred. A product of the Edwardian era, Underhill's works are romantic and unashamedly sensuous. A prominent figure in her field of interest while she was writing, Underhill remains a respected writer on religion and spiritual practice.

The «Mahabharata» tells the narrative of the Kurukshetra War and the fates of the Kaurava and the Pandava princes who are part of it. Along with the «Ramayana» it is one of two Sanskrit epics of ancient India. The authorship of the work is generally attributed to Vyasa, who is also a major character in the epic. Intermixed within the descriptions of conflict between the warring factions of this epic are numerous philosophical digressions and discussions of Hinduism. One of the more famous of these digressions is the «Bhagavad-Gita», a battlefield conversation between Pandava prince Arjuna and his guide Lord Krishna on a variety of theological and philosophical issues. Also included within the «Mahabharata» are the story of «Damayanti» and «Rishyasringa,» often considered as works in their own right. This sweeping epic, the longest every written in Sanskrit, is widely considered as one of the most important works to ever be authored in any language. This four volume edition collects together the complete epic in a translation by Kisari Mohan Ganguli. Here we have the first volume which includes books one through three.

"Strange rumors reached the ears of the people of Jerusalem and the surrounding country. It was reported that a new prophet had appeared in the valley of the lower Jordan, and in the wilderness of Northern Judea, preaching startling doctrines. His teachings resembled those of the prophets of old, and his cry of «Repent! Repent ye! for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand,» awakened strange memories of the ancient teachers of the race, and caused the common people to gaze wonderingly at each other, and the ruling classes to frown and look serious, when the name of the new prophet was mentioned." So begins «Mystic Christianity or The Inner Teachings of the Master», a classic work of religious teachings by Yogi Ramacharaka.

John Foxe (1517-1587) was an English historian and martyrologist. He early became a Protestant and, when Mary Tudor became queen, he fled from England to Strasbourg, France. There, he occupied himself with a Latin history of the Christian persecutions and he printed, in Latin, the first part of his history of the persecution of Protestant reformers. «Foxe's Book of Martyrs» is an account of Christian martyrs throughout Western history, emphasizing the sufferings of English Protestants and proto-Protestants from the fourteenth century through the reign of Mary I. The book helped mold British popular opinion about the Catholic Church for several centuries as it was widely owned and read by English Puritans. During Elizabeth's reign, this book was highly celebrated and even became required reading. It was placed in churches and reprinted in shorter editions so that many households possessed a copy.
