The Call of the Wild is a novel by American writer Jack London. The plot concerns a previously domesticated and even somewhat pampered dog named Buck, whose primordial instincts return after a series of events finds him serving as a sled dog in the treacherous, frigid Yukon during the days of the 19th century Klondike Gold Rushes. Published in 1903, The Call of the Wild is one of London's most-read books, and it is generally considered one of his best. Because the protagonist is a dog, it is sometimes classified as a juvenile novel, suitable for children, but it is dark in tone and contains numerous scenes of cruelty and violence. London followed the book in 1906 with White Fang, a companion novel with many similar plot elements and themes as The Call of the Wild, although following a mirror image plot in which a wild wolf becomes civilized by a mining expert from San Francisco named Weedon Scott.

La historia arranca a partir de un portento de huracán que hace naufragar al Petite Jeanne, el carguero en el que viajan. Otoo y el protagonista, el anglosajón que cuenta la historia, se salvan asiéndose de un madero. A partir de ese momento, de vida y muerte, la relación de ambos se afianza. Llegan a intercambiar nombres. El pagano será Charley y el blanco Otoo, en una ceremonia muy importante en esas regiones, «que establece entre dos hombres vínculos más estrechos que los de la sangre». A lo largo de diecisiete años recorren juntos distintos puertos y efectúan distintos trabajos, incluido el comercio de perlas en Tuamotú. Charley agradece a su amigo esa compañía: «Yo soy obra suya. De no haber existido él, hoy sería yo un sobrecargo, un reclutador de negros y un simple recuerdo». «El pagano» es un tributo a esa camaradería («me atrevería a decir que nunca hubo algo parecido entre un hombre blanco y uno moreno») que ofrece, al final, mediante el último de los sacrificios y con un tiburón de por medio, un desenlace que para mí cuenta como uno de los más logrados en la obra de London.
