Dem Orden, dem wahrscheinlich auch Bulwer-Lytton angehörte, wird nachgesagt, dass seine Mitglieder durch «vollendete Lebenskunst» und ein ganz aussergewöhnliches Maß an Wissen aus der Naturwissenschaft und Philosophie ein Mittel gefunden haben wollen, das menschliche Leben vor Krankheit, Alterung und Tod zu schützen und dass sie – durch ihre Kunst – so lange zu leben vermochten, wie das Leben ihnen Genuss und Freude bot, kurz – das Lebenselixier gefunden zu haben.
In diesem Roman, der im frühen 19. Jahrhundert spielt, trifft ein Arzt auf Margrave, einen undurchsichtigen Schüler des Okkulten. Dieser wirft seinen Schatten über die gesamte Handlung, auch über Fenwicks Liebe zu Lilian Ashleigh, einer jungen Dame der Gesellschaft, hinter deren Hang zum Mystischen sich eine ausserordentliche Fähigkeit verbirgt.
