First published in 1913, this provocative semi-autobiographical novel reflects the struggles of Paul Morel, an artist who cannot reciprocate love for other women while under the influence of his stifling mother. Unconsciously taught to despise his father and eschew other women, Paul comes even further under his mother's psychological grasp after the death of his older brother. When he eventually does fall in love, the results of confused affection and desire are painful for all concerned. While «Sons and Lovers» scandalized its original English readers for its oedipal implications and social criticism, it remains a powerful story of terrifying inner and outer conflict and intense sensuality.

Lawrence was not widely respected in his day. In fact at the time of his death he was considered little more than a pornographer. However E. M. Forester challenged this portrayal calling Lawrence «The greatest imaginative novelist of our generation», and with his extended reflection upon the dehumanizing effects of modernity and industrialization, Lawrence has ultimately secured his position as one of the greatest writers in the English language. This great literary talent is exhibited by the short stories collected within this volume which includes the complete contents of the individual short story volumes «The Prussian Officer and Other Stories» and «England, My England» as well as four additional stories.

The sequel to «The Rainbow», D. H. Lawrence's «Women in Love» follows the continuing lives and loves of Gudrun and Ursula Brangwen. This is the story of two sisters, Ursula, a teacher, and Gudrun, an artist, living in the midlands of England during the early 20th century who meet two men who live nearby, Rupert Birkin and Gerald Crich, and soon get involved with them romantically. Controversial during its time, «Women in Love» is a tragic tale of love set against the backdrop of the First World War.

While tame by today's standards, «The Rainbow», for its frank treatment of human sexuality, caused Lawence to be prosecuted on an obscenity charge in England when it was first published. Through richly personal characterizations, «The Rainbow» deals profoundly with the very nature of human relations as it explores the sexuality of Ursula Brangwen and her mother, Anna Brangwen.
