The events in this novel take place during the last few weeks of the Anglo-Boer War. A small group of Boer soldiers departs from the Colony to the Free State to take a traumatised young man back to his home. Two of the men, Reitz Steyn and Ben Maritz, are scientists, and the novel focuses on their experiences. The suffering and hardships of the war left its mark on this little group, and especially Reitz and Ben are increasingly aware of the futility of it all. On their way they are apprehended and held in a strange camp by other Boers. After they have been wounded during the execution of a mysterious assignment Reitz and Ben are cared for by three women on a nearby farm. Their stay with these women offers a chance for healing in more than one respect. An impressive novel written with an understated poignancy and drama about the futility of war.

Op hulle tog word hulle ’n paar weke lank in ’n klein opvangskamp deur lede van generaal Bergh se kommando aangehou. Terwyl hulle ’n opdrag vir die generaal uitvoer, word Reitz en Ben egter gewond en daarna op ’n nabygeleë plaas deur drie Boerevroue verpleeg, waar hulle tot aan die einde van die oorlog vertoef. Op die oog af ’n eenvoudige gegewe, maar wat Ingrid Winterbach daarmee doen, daarin lê die verrassende van hierdie roman. Hierdie roman is bekroon met die Hertzogprys in 2004.

A remarkable novel by one of the most important Afrikaans writers of our time. The Afrikaans edition, Die boek van toeval en toeverlaat, has already won three major literary awards. Two of the novel’s most important themes are loss and concealment: A woman goes to Durban to assist in an Afrikaans language preservation project. Then her cottage is burgled and her beautiful collection of shells is missing. Her determined search for her shells becomes interwoven with her work and the people she gets to know, especially her new friend, Sof. And in the process she also reflects on her life – her childhood, her family, her lovers before her marriage, her ex-husband, her current lover.
