لا يكفي للانفاق على الاحتياجات المتجددة يومًا بعد يوم فهو ينفق من تلاده فيكون النقص مستمرًا في ماله فان مضى إلى سبيله واقتسم أبناؤه ما بقي من ثروته لم يصب الواحد منهم إلا الكفاف وكن على يقين انه لا يمضي جيل واحد إلا وتندثر بيوت من بقي من الأغنياء واعلم أن البيت الذي يتدفق بالغنى الآن ويتكفل بالثروة ويفتح مغالق الكنوز ويقوم مقام القصور التي كان الإنسان يدخلها فقيرًا فيخرج منها ليومه بل لساعته غنيًا هو بيت البورصه.

      Broker (to the Rich Man) There’s no denying the fact that former patterns of wealth have vanished. The days of old are long gone when a man could become rich with a word or gesture and find himself thereby the richest of the rich after being considered the poorest of the poor. Egyptians now live in an era when everything is poverty and need; no one is handing out estates, granting feudal rights, and dispensing largesse. Wealthy people remain indifferent, only investing through notes on which foreigners with their companies have a monopoly. You’re all too aware that such sources of revenue are not sufficient to meet needs that keep increasing day by day. As a result people have to spend part of their inherited property. The losses to a person’s wealth never stop. If he continues this way and then tries to divide his property among his children, they each land up with just enough to live on and that’s all. You can be sure that, before a single generation has passed, the wealthy’s family homes that are left will vanish. But you should know that there is one place now that gushes with money and guarantees wealth. It can unlock treasure chests and take the place of those palaces where a person could enter in poverty, then emerge that very day, or rather that very hour, as a rich man. I’m referring to the Stock Market.¹⁴

      الغني لا تذكر لي اسم البورصة وقد سمعنا في هذه الأيام عن فلان وفلان وفلان ما فيه عبرة للمعتبر

      السمسار وأنا أرجو سعادتكم أن لا تستشهد بمن سميتهم فإن السبب في خسارتهم معلوم وليس هو من فعل البورصة ولكن من فعل أنفسهم بأنفسهم فإن الأول منهم كان يعتمد في المضارية في بيعه وشرائه على ما تشير به عليه امرأة سودانية وأخرى افرنكية تلك بودعها وهذه بورقها. وأما الثاني فإنه سمع رجلا مجذوبًا له اعتقاد فيه يصيح عليه في طريقه بقوله «اذهب عني يا زيد» وكان مترددًا بين البيع والشراء فتفاعل بالكلمة فأخذ بها فأدار المركبة إلى سمساره فأمره بأن يشتري له عشرين ألف قنطار فنصحه فلم ينتصح ومانعه فلم يمتنع فنزلت الأسعار وابتلع المغتر كلمة الشتم فاستفرغ زبدة أمواله. وأما الثالث فكان اعتماده على ما يستنتجه بنفسه من أقوال الجرائد وملاحظاتها وكلهم لم يأخذوا بالجد في العمل ولم يعملوا بنصيحة سماسرتهم الذين هم أدرى بالمضاربات وأعلم بوجوهها وأعرف بتقلباتها.

      الغني أعلم أنه مهما برعت في الجدال وتفننت في إقامة البرهان فإني لا أعتبر مضاربة البورصة إلا مقامرة والمقامرة عين المخاطرة.

      Rich Man Don’t even mention the words “Stock Market.” In just the last few days, I’ve heard what it did to X, Y, and Z. That’s enough to give pause to any sensible person.

      Broker Please, Sir, don’t use the cases of X, Y, and Z as examples. The reason why they lost is obvious enough; it’s not the Stock Exchange’s fault, but rather what they did for themselves. The first resorted to speculation in his buying and selling, relying on advice from one of two fortune-tellers: one a Sudanese woman using seashells, the other a European with bits of paper. The second one heard a lunatic whom he trusted yelling in the street “Go away, Zayd!” At that particular moment, he was wavering between buying and selling. Taking those words as an omen, he rushed in his carriage to the broker and told him to buy twenty thousand qanṭars. The broker tried to counsel against it, but he refused to accept the advice; all the broker’s attempts to prevent a loss were rebuffed. Prices fell, and the idiot had to swallow his curses as he lost all his money. The third relied entirely on what the newspapers had to say. None of the three treated things seriously or took their brokers’ advice. Those brokers are the people with the best information on speculation; they’re the best informed about its ups and downs.

      Rich Man You may have just given me an expert argument and skillful proof, but you should know that I can’t regard speculation on the Stock Exchange as anything but a very risky venture.

      السمسار أما المخاطرة فهي مع الإنسان في كل حركة ومن حاول أن يحترس من الأخطار فلا يخرج من بيته على أنه فيه معرض للخطر أيضًا وإني مقنعك من نفسك : قلت لي الآن ان لديك من زراعتك ثلاثة آلاف قنطار من ستمائة فدان زرعتها قطنًا في هذه السنة وهذه القناطير مخزونة عندك تتربص لها صعود الأسعار غير مبال بما يلحقها من نقص الوزن وما يتهددها من الأخطار كالسرقة والحريق فإذا كنت تنتظر الزيادة والصعود في أثمان ثلاثة آلاف قنطار فما أولاك أن تنتظرها في أرباح ثلاثين ألفًا في الكونتراتات وما اشتريت أرضًا وما أنفقت على حرث وما خشيت تلف زرع وما بذلت ماء وجهك رجاء ري وما دخلت في قضايا ومنازعات ومشاكل مع الجيران والحكام وما تخوفت الآفات سماوية كانت أو أرضية بل هو ربح عفوا صفوا ولا رأسمال له سوى أربعة حروف تخطها يدك في امضائك.

      الغني مهما أقمت لي من الأدلة والبراهين فإني أجد نفسي غير مطمئنة إلى الدخول في هذا الباب
