خضراء في خـاتـم ذهـب

      ʿĪsā ibn Hishām said: As our conversation proceeded in this fashion, I found myself delighted on two accounts; I wasn’t sure which of the two was the more powerful emotion: my delight in listening to my colleague and realizing with joy how far he’d progressed in his thinking, appreciation, and psychological state; or my own delight as I looked at the gardens bathed in the late afternoon sunlight. I recalled the lines written by a colleague to describe this lovely park and its gorgeous vistas:

      The Ezbekiyyah Gardens possess a beauty

      that delights the hearts of observers.

      Should you come there before sunset,

      you see a green emerald in a golden ring.⁶

      ثمّ تمشينا حتى وصلنا إلى المغارة المصنوعة فيه فرأينا صنعًا جميلاً وشكلا أنيقًا، وأخذت الباشا هزة الطرب بخرير الماء، فأخذ كل منا مجلسه على كراسي فيها أعدت للزائرين وما كاد يلتفت الباشا لفتة حتى ارتد إليّ بسرعة وقال: ألا ترى أنّ هؤلاء الجالسين من المصريين؟ فالتفت فإذا هم كما قال، وإذا بهم ثلاثة يتجاذبون الحديث فأصغينا إلى حديثهم من زاويتنا فتبيّن لنا منه أنّ أحدهم من عمد الأرياف، والثاني من تجار الثغور، والثالث من أهل البطالة والخلاعة وسمعنا العمدة يقول للخليع في مجرى كلامه:

      العمدة وأين إذن ما دخلنا الحديقة لأجله؟ وهل كان جل قصدك أن نجلس هنا في كثافة الأشجار ورطوبة الهواء، ووخامة الماء؟ وما أجد فرقًا بين هذا المنظر وبين منظر ذلك المستنقع الذي خلفته خلف بلدتنا، ولعمري إنّ الإوز الذي يسبح فيه هناك أضعاف أضعاف هذا الإوز الذي يسبح أمامنا، وما لنا ولهذه الأشجار العقيمة التي لا تسمن ولا تغني من جوع، فهلمّ فأطعمنا أنت من ذلك الثمر الشهي واللحم الطري كما وعدتنا.

      We continued walking till we reached the artificial grotto in a section of the garden. We observed its beautiful shape and exquisite craftsmanship. As water gushed from clefts, the Pāshā was overjoyed, and we decided to sit down on some chairs placed there for visitors. No sooner had he looked round than he turned back to me quickly and asked: “Aren’t those three people sitting over there Egyptians?” I turned round and looked. He was right. They were busy talking to each other, so we listened from our seats to what they were saying. From their conversation, we gathered that one of them was a country ʿumdah,⁷ the second was a port merchant, and the third a dissolute playboy. We picked up the conversation the ʿUmdah was having with the Playboy:

      ʿUmdah So where’s the thing we came to these gardens for? Did you really mean for us to sit here under these trees, with all this humidity and polluted water? I can’t see any difference between the view here and the swamp I left behind in my village. By my life, the ducks swimming in the swamp there are far more numerous than the ones swimming around in front of us here. What’s the point of these useless trees that don’t bear any fruit or help relieve your hunger! Come on, feed us some of that luscious fruit and fresh game you promised us!

      الخليع مهلاً، فإنّ هذا لا يفوتك وما كنت أظنّ أنّ الأمر وصل بالحديقة إلى هذا الخراب إلا عندما سألت أحد المارين من خدمها الآن فعلمت منه أنّ الحكومة لخلوّ يدها من الأشغال لم تجد أمامها شيئًا في خدمة الوطن إلا التضييق على هذه الحديقة تضييق المصلحين عليها، فرأت أنّ إصلاحها لا يتم إلا بمنع ذوات البرقع والقناع من دخولها، ولا أقول إلا قول الجرائد في التأفف من أعمال الحكومة {حَسْبُنَا اللَّـهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ}.

      التاجر وعلى هذا فقد ذهبت تلك الأيام التي كانت فيها الحديقة بهجة للناظرين، ومرتعًا للغزلان، وملعبًا للغيد الحسان، ومنهلاً عذبًا لطلاب الراح، وقصاد الملاح، وطالما دخلت هنا وحيدًا فخرجت وقد اقتنصت من آرامها مئتي وثلاث ورباع.

      العمدة يعلم الله أنّ القاهرة أصبحت على هذا الحال ممّا لا يصح فيها الإقامة إلا مسافة قضاء الحاجة والرجوع من الفور إلى البلدويا ليت الأمر كان قاصرًا على الحديقة في حرماني هذه المرة من حظ النفس، فإني سهرت أمس مع فلان الموظف في الديوان الفلاني لأنزهه وأبسطه كعادتي في إنجاز حاجتي فسحبني قاتله الله إلى أماكن شتى من أماكن الأزبكية يهوى التردد عليها، فلم أجد في جميعها ما يوافق هواي كما تعلم، وخرجت من السهرة مصدع الرأس من الخمر خالي الجيب من القمار، وما اكتفى الخبيث بنفسه، بل دار حول أصحابه يجمعهم حولي، وأنا القائم بنفقتهم، وكلما رأى مني انحرافًا عن أحد منهم قال لي هذا فلان وله اليد الطولى في قضاء الحاجات.

      Playboy Steady on! You won’t miss a thing. I didn’t realize that these gardens would have been reduced to such a state of desolation. But then I’ve just asked a servant who happened to be passing by. I’ve learned that the government apparently has nothing else to do; the only way it can find to serve the people is by restricting access to these gardens as reformers demand. Such reforms involve preventing girls with veils and shawls from entering the gardens. With that in mind, I can only quote the newspapers’ phrase when grumbling about government action: «We count on God, and good is the trustee!»⁸
