 My wife is a French lady. She was Mademoiselle Clotilde Delorge – when I was first presented to her at her father’s house in France. I fell in love with her – I really don’t know why. It might have been because I was perfectly idle, and had nothing else to do at the time. Or it might have been because all my friends said she was the very last woman whom I ought to think of marrying. On the surface, I must own, there is nothing in common between Mrs. Fairbank and me. She is tall; she is dark; she is nervous, excitable, romantic; in all her opinions she proceeds to extremes.

      What could such a woman see in me (что могла такая женщина увидеть во мне; to see – видеть; находить, обнаруживать)? what could I see in her (что мог я найти в ней)? I know no more than you do (я знаю /об этом/ не больше, чем вы). In some mysterious manner we exactly suit each other (каким-то таинственным образом мы прекрасно подходим друг другу; manner – метод, способ; манера; exactly – точно, в точности; вполне, совершенно; exact – точный; точно соответствующий; each – каждый; other – другой, иной; второй, другой /из двух, трех/). We have been man and wife for ten years (мы являемся мужем и женой /уже/ десять лет; man – мужчина, человек; муж), and our only regret is, that we have no children (и наше единственное огорчение в том, что у нас нет детей; regret – сожаление, огорчение; child – ребенок, дитя). I don’t know what you may think (не знаю, что вы можете подумать); I call that – upon the whole – a happy marriage (я называю это – в общем/в целом – счастливым браком; whole – целое).

      So much for ourselves (достаточно о нас: «так много для нас»; so much for – это все, что касается…; довольно, хватит о…). The next question is – what has brought us into the inn yard (следующий вопрос – что привело нас во двор этой гостиницы; to bring – приносить; приводить)? and why am I obliged to turn groom, and hold the horses (и почему я вынужден стать грумом и /сам/ держать лошадей; to turn – поворачивать/ся/; превращаться /в кого-л., что-л./; становиться /кем-л., чем-л./)?

      We live for the most part in France (мы живем большей частью во Франции) – at the country house in which my wife and I first met (в загородном доме, в котором моя жена и я впервые встретились; country – деревенский, сельский; country – страна; сельская местность; провинция; to meet – встречать/ся/). Occasionally, by way of variety (время от времени, для разнообразия; occasionally – изредка, время от времени; occasional – случающийся время от времени, иногда; occasion – случай), we pay visits to my friends in England (мы наносим визиты нашим друзьям в Англии; to pay – платить; наносить /визит/).

 What could such a woman see in me? what could I see in her? I know no more than you do. In some mysterious manner we exactly suit each other.
