First published in 1923, “Spring and All” is the groundbreaking volume of poetry by the modernist and imagist American poet William Carlos Williams. Williams, born in New Jersey in 1883, worked as a doctor for most of his life while spending his free time writing plays, short stories, novels, essays, and poetry. Containing some of Williams’s best-known poetry, the volume alternates between prose and free verse. Williams’s prose has been described as cryptic, dramatic, and full of energy. Greatly influenced by T. S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land”, which was published in 1922, Williams sought to recreate the world through language, rather than merely describe it. This desire and Eliot’s influence are evident in his beautiful and evocative poems. Two of Williams’s most famous poems can be found in this volume, numbered in the book as I and XXII, these poems are known more commonly as “Spring and All” and “The Red Wheelbarrow” respectively. While “Spring and All” received little attention during Williams’s lifetime, it was reprinted after his death and continues to be viewed as an important and significant work of American literature, being named by the Library of Congress in 2012 as one of the 88 “Books that Shaped America”.

Farid ud-Din Attar (1145/46 – 1221) was a Persian poet, druggist, and social theorist of Sufism, who wrote much of his poetry while treating hundreds of patients a day with his herbal remedies. As a young man he made a pilgrimage to Mecca, and sought wisdom during his travels in Egypt, Damascus and India. His masterpiece, «The Conference of the Birds», has survived centuries because of its captivating poetic style and its symbolic exploration on the true nature of God. This 4500-line poem follows the birds of the world, each of which hold special significance, as they seek out the Simorgh – a mythical Persian bird much like the phoenix – in hopes that he might be their king. The birds must cross seven valleys on their quest, each of which represents various trials that the individual must pass through to realize the true nature of God. Within the overlying allegory, Attar captivates readers with short, charming stories in beautiful and clever language.

Composed by Alfred Tennyson as a requiem for his college friend Arthur Henry Hallam, who died suddenly of a cerebral hemorrhage in 1833, «In Memoriam A. H. H.» is a poem written over a seventeen year period and completed in 1849. Widely considered as one of the greatest poems of the Victorian era it is a richly lyrical work which meditates on the search for hope in the wake of a great loss. The length of this work and the period of time in which Tennyson took to complete it speaks volumes as to the personal impact of the loss of such a close friend. Central to this work is an examination of death and spirituality as part of the grieving process. Tennyson’s psyche can be seen transforming through the course of this work. What begins as a spirit filled with doubt and despair transforms into one of faith and hope by the end of the work. «In Memoriam A. H. H.» is a powerful examination of death and loss, one in which the author exposes a very personal process of how he dealt with the loss of one of his closest friends.
