Gradually, the guests begin to reminisce about their own experiences and encounters with perfect and not-so-perfect women. Throughout the entertaining back-and-forth, Balzac presents a number of keen insights about the social mores governing women's behavior in nineteenth-century Europe.

Ein Mann, so bösartig er auch sein mag, wird nie so viel Gutes oder Schlechtes über Frauen sagen, wie sie selbst denken. Wenn eine Frau trotz dieses Ratschlages darauf besteht, das Werk zu lesen, muss sie sich aus Feingefühl das Gesetz auferlegen, den Autor nicht zu verunglimpfen. Geschrieben 1842.
