Dr. Peter Blood is a sharp-witted Irish physician who had had a wide-ranging career as a soldier and sailor (including a commission as a captain under the Dutch admiral De Ruyter) before settling down to practice medicine in the town of Bridgwater in Somerset. Dr. Blood involuntary gets involved in the Monmouth Rebellion while the town prepares to fight for James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth. He wants no part in the rebellion, but while attending to some of the rebels wounded at the Battle of Sedgemoor, Peter is arrested and convicted of treason. The sentence is death by hanging, but King James II, for purely financial reasons, has the sentence for rebels commuted to transportation to the Caribbean, where they are to be sold into slavery. When a Spanish force attacks and raids the town of Bridgetown, Blood escapes with a number of other convict-slaves, captures the Spaniards' ship and sails away to become one of the most successful pirates in the Caribbean, hated and feared by the Spanish and always sparing English ships. "In «„Sir Judas,“» Sabatini attempts to draw a group of more or less famous events using the fiction form, but without amplifying it by imagination. Each incident is an actual historic happening; the dialogue is such as was chronicled at the time, added to by the paraphrases of contemporary chroniclers; the settings are authentic. A hard task, this, the author has set himself, but his labor was lightened by being able to choose the most vivid and bizarre “nights” in all countries and all periods of history. How greatly he has succeeded is for the reader to judge.<P> This story, taken from the famous pulp magazine «„Adventure,“» includes the original interior artwork."

First published in 1922, “Captain Blood” is an entertaining tale of pirates by Rafael Sabatini, the Italian-English author of adventure and romance novels. “Captain Blood” tells the story of Dr. Peter Blood, an Irish physician who had traded his past life as a sailor and a soldier for a quiet life tending to his garden and patients in Somerset, England. Dr. Blood attends to the wounds of rebels injured in the Battle of Sedgemoor during the Monmouth Rebellion and is soon arrested for treason. While he did not actually participate in the rebellion and merely did what he felt he must, he is tried and convicted nonetheless. The sentence for treason is death, but King James II has the sentence commuted and instead sells Dr. Blood and his fellow rebels into slavery in the Caribbean. Dr. Blood continues to demonstrate his bravery and decency after he is bought by the cruel Colonel Bishop and takes advantage of a raid by Spanish forces to escape his new owner. Dr. Blood acquires a ship and quickly becomes the most successful pirate in the Caribbean, ultimately triumphing over his enemies and misfortune. “Captain Blood” remains a gripping and entertaining tale of pirates and high sea adventures.
