James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) se considera el primer gran novelista norteamericano de fama internacional gracias a sus historias de aventuras, en especial 'El último de los mohicanos'. Antes de consolidarse como tal, sin embargo, probó suerte con la narrativa breve y acometió la redacción de algunos relatos de índole sentimental e intimista, de los que solo acabó dos: «Imaginación» y «Corazón». Nada más publicarlos, bajo un pseudónimo femenino y con el título de 'Cuentos para quinceañeras', se desentendió de ellos, por lo que han pasado desapercibidos para gran parte de la crítica. Con el propósito de enriquecer el estudio de la etapa inaugural de la literatura estadounidense, presentamos la primera versión en español y la edición crítica de estos textos olvidados que constituyen un eslabón perdido en la historia del cuento norteamericano.
