‘Twenty years on, I haven’t lost the initial wonderment at seeing people’s auras. I want to see if you can do the same thing.’

       Roz

We parked the car and walked through the winding streets of Bath, peering in café windows, looking for signs of busyness – our unwitting psychic subjects. At last, we found a café with people clustered around circular tables. We positioned ourselves in a corner and ordered breakfast with large coffees.

At the table directly in front of us, there was a woman with tousled blonde hair. I focused six inches above her head, held my gaze steady and tried to see her aura. Nothing. I looked across the room at a man in the corner, reading a newspaper. Again, I tried to see his aura and again, I saw nothing at all. I had lost the ability to see.

      ‘I can’t do it, I can’t see anything.’

       Mia

‘You tried to start already? We just walked a mile looking at cafés, you’re cold, your heart is still pumping, you haven’t even taken your jacket off. You’re not comfortable enough to see anything.’

       Roz

I realized I was expecting a lot of myself – I wanted instant results.

      ‘So what should I do?’

       Mia

‘You haven’t got to be in a state of meditation, but you do have to be comfortable. If your body is uncomfortable in any way, it calls your attention away. Over the years, I have tried many different ways to relax. For me, the important thing is that relaxation is instant – like changing the station on a radio. If I asked you to clench a muscle, you could do it easily – I believe it is just as easy to let it go.’

‘The best and quickest way I’ve found – and the one I use before every reading – is the “sigh and drop” routine. Sit comfortably and put your hands in a relaxed position – it doesn’t matter where you place them as long as they are not tight or clenched.’

‘Lots of people say focus on your breath and breathe deeply, but I find one big sigh is enough. Take a deep breath in and hold it for a moment. Then, as you sigh and the air comes out of your lungs, let everything – all the muscles in your body – drop. Shoulders, back, hips, stomach, chest, thighs. Let them all go.’

‘Suddenly you will be able to feel the weight of your body in the chair. You have just brought yourself back to you.’

       Roz

I always thought relaxation involved focused breathing but this ‘dropping’ into a relaxed state was surprisingly effective – and quick. I looked again at the table in front of us. The blonde woman was eating chips. I focused my eyes above her head and suddenly it was there – two inches of shimmering white light haloing her shoulders and head.

In a city café, I was looking at a stranger and seeing her aura. It was incredibly exciting – could it be for real?

‘See the woman at the next table. I managed to see her aura but I could only see it for a couple of seconds and then it was gone.’

       Mia

Looking at the light in Roz’s eyes, I could see her excitement. And I was sharing it. Our first trip out and she was seeing auras in an every day situation – it was more than I had expected.

      ‘Great. Now try someone else.’

       Roz

I looked around the café, trying to appear inconspicuous. To my left, a man sat reading a book. I tried to see his aura, but couldn’t.

‘I’m trying to see that man’s aura over there, and I can’t get it.’

       Mia

‘That’s because he’s sitting in front of a poster – there’s too much information in the background. Your eyes are having to deal with all those colours; they’re not being allowed to rest.’

‘Very early on, I discovered that if there was a plain background it was much easier to see. If there’s a busy background, you have to work harder to see a person’s aura.’

       Roz

I looked back at the blonde-haired woman. She was sitting in front of a white wall, but now she had been joined by an older woman. I tried to see her aura again but, although I caught glimpses of it, it was harder to see than before. Exasperated, I wondered if my ability to see auras had been a fluke.

‘I’m not sure if I’m seeing auras or not. I’m looking at the same woman, but I’m only getting flashes of white around her. It’s not constant.’

       Mia

‘Okay, what’s changed since the last time you looked?’

       Roz

‘Nothing apart from the fact that she’s talking.’

       Mia

‘That’s it, Roz. She’s not as still as the first time you looked. The faster somebody is moving, the harder it is to see their aura. To get your confidence back, do the sigh and drop routine and then look at that guy sitting on his own in the corner.’

       Roz

He was drinking a cup of tea and staring out of the window. As I focused above his head, I saw the white light around him.

‘I’ve got it, but how do I know it’s real? How do I know I’m not making it up?’

       Mia

‘Okay, look at the till and find its aura.’

       Roz

I swivelled round in my chair and looked a few inches above the till. Nothing. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get any signs of light around this mechanical device. It was reassuring. I couldn’t put an aura there just because I wanted to.

       Mia

      ‘Now look at that plant.’

       Roz

A few feet away, there was a large pot plant trailing masses of small leaves.

‘I’m focusing above it, but I can’t see anything.’

       Mia

I sat for a minute or two, looking at the plant and seeing its aura. How was I seeing it? This was something I had never questioned. It came so naturally to me. Then I realized I was looking at the plant, not above it.

‘Okay, Roz, because the plant is so still and has a much smaller life force, you need to look directly at it. Look at one leaf and slightly unfocus your eyes. Remember, just look don’t expect anything.’
