This type of house, typical for a tenement, consisted of a front room or parlour, which was for entertaining guests, and a kitchen, which had one or more bed recesses, curtained areas that contained the household’s bed or beds. The Livingstones’ new house had an inside toilet; many were less fortunate and had to share a toilet on the landing between floors.
