(с греч. био – жизнь) – еще один элемент в структуре Земли (геологического уровня структурной организации материи) наряду с геосферой, гидросферой и атмосферой – живая оболочка планеты – живые организмы и условия их обитания – определенный уровень структурной организации материи. Настоящая биосфера – результат длительного развития живых организмов и измененных ими условий существования, неразрывно связанных с другими элементами Земли. Данный раздел можно начать с рассмотрения биосферы как она есть сейчас с последующим переходом на другие уровни по нисходящей вплоть до молекулярного уровня, но лучше начать с возникновения жизни – с молекулярного уровня, постепенно переходя по более высшим уровням структурной организации биосистем. Геологический уровень структурной организации материи, рассмотренный в предшествующем разделе, относится к неживой (неорганической) материи, хотя сегодня выделить ее в чистом виде можно лишь условно: слишком большой путь развития Земли пройден с ее элементами – геосферой, гидросферой, атмосферой и биосферой, претерпевшей существенные изменения. Биологический уровень структурной организации материи возник на определенном этапе развития геологической материи при появлении определенных условий среды, на базе сравнительно небольшого сочетания углеродисто водородистых соединений. Живые организмы, в отличие от неживой, мёртвой материи, рождаются, размножаются и умирают; но самое главное – в них непрерывно идёт обмен веществ. Они питаются неорганическими веществами или другими организмами, перерабатывая эту пищу в клетках своего тела. Одной из важнейших характеристик организмов является их клеточное строение, хотя в природе имеются примеры, промежуточные – между живыми и неживыми, молекулярным и клеточным представителями материи. С одной стороны это атомы, соединяемые в молекулы и кристаллы, а с другой – вирусы.
