While he is best known for being the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt is also remembered for his immense love of nature, animals, and game hunting. «African Game Trails» is Roosevelt's memoirs about a hunting trip to Africa that he took with his son Kermit in 1908. In the text, he vividly describes the country in exotic detail. In full detail, he depicts the enthusiastic thrill of the hunt as well as the beauty of the animals he tracked. He also portrays his interactions with other famous game hunters such as Major Boyd Cunningham and Frederick Selous, who is known as one of the last big game hunters in Africa. As a naturalist, Roosevelt was immensely interested in the native flora and fauna of East Africa. He included descriptions of fascinating plants and animals that are only found on the continent, introducing the natural landscape of Africa to readers who had never seen it. Roosevelt was a firm believer in portraying wildlife as naturally as possible; he even wrote a number of essays denouncing anthropomorphism in literature. He wanted his works to be as realistic and life-like as possible, so that «African Game Trails» is a true representation of the beauty and majesty that Roosevelt saw during his trip to East Africa. His adventures in the untamed jungles of the continent are as thrilling now as they were when the book was first published in the early twentieth century.

There may be no better example of American individualism and rugged outdoorsman than the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. In this volume we find two of Roosevelt’s works on hunting, “Hunting Trips of a Ranchman”, and “The Wilderness Hunter”, combined into one volume. Roosevelt, who as President would bring some 230 million acres of land under the protection of the National Parks and Forest Services, was an avid naturalist and his great devotion to the outdoors is evident in his depiction of his beloved Elkhorn Ranch in both of these books. Roosevelt devoted careful attention to both the details of the sport of hunting and the picturesque world around him as “Hunting Trips of a Ranchman” and “The Wilderness Hunter” function as nature travelogues and practical treatises on how to bag game. These works take place in one of Roosevelt’s favorites places, his Elkhorn ranch, which was located on the banks of the Little Missouri River in North Dakota. The location is now a part of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Roosevelt’s exciting and descriptive recollections of numerous hunts in these volumes will thrill and delight both the hunting and nature aficionado. This edition includes a biographical afterword.

Author Nona Kilgore Bauer begins Retriever Madness with a chapter called “Know Your Retrievers,” and few know their retrievers like this expert author, trainer, and breeder. Bauer introduces the readers to the six retrievers recognized by the American Kennel Club, among them two of the most popular companion dogs in the world, the Labrador Retriever and the Golden Retriever, along with other superb overachievers: the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Flat-Coated Retriever, Curly-Coated Retriever, and Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.Geared toward readers who are interested in working with their retrievers in their bred-for capacity—hunting water fowl and upland game birds—Retriever Madness is the perfect primer to getting started in the field. The book offers advice on selecting a puppy with hunting potential, giving future owners insight on how to evaluate a puppy’s birdiness, independence, prey drive, and personality. The chapter on bringing the puppy home gives recommendations for basic training equipment, including leashes, collars, dummies, whistles, starting pistol and the like.Amateur retriever owners who hope to hunt with their dogs will find excellent advice for training for the puppy’s first twenty weeks of life, the most critical period for training any puppy. In addition to the basic commands (sit, down, stay), the author also explains the release command, whistle commands, forward and backward heeling, and wait.Four chapters are devoted to beginning field work, presenting diagrams and step-by-step instructions and covering such topics as puppy marks, throwing, water retrieves, steadying, force-fetching, marking, executing blind retrieves and more. The author offers remedies to commonly encountered problems in the field as well as a complete glossary of terminology that all readers will find helpful in understanding the lingo of the field retriever.

In this engaging creative writing workbook, novelist and poet Linda Lappin presents a series of insightful exercises to help writers of all genres—literary travel writing, memoir, poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction—discover imagery and inspiration in the places they love.Lappin departs from the classical concept of the Genius Loci, the indwelling spirit residing in every landscape, house, city, or forest—to argue that by entering into contact with the unique energy and identity of a place, writers can access an inexhaustible source of creative power. The Soul of Place provides instruction on how to evoke that power. The writing exercises are drawn from many fields—architecture, painting, cuisine, literature and literary criticism, geography and deep maps, Jungian psychology, fairy tales, mythology, theater and performance art, metaphysics—all of which offer surprising perspectives on our writing and may help us uncover raw materials for fiction, essays, and poetry hidden in our environment. An essential resource book for the writer’s library, this book is ideal for creative writing courses, with stimulating exercises adaptable to all genres. For writers or travelers about to set out on a trip abroad, The Soul of Place is the perfect road trip companion, attuning our senses to a deeper awareness of place.

In A Sense of Place, journalist/travel writer Michael Shapiro goes on a pilgrimage to visit the world's great travel writers on their home turf to get their views on their careers, the writer's craft, and most importantly, why they chose to live where they do and what that place means to them. The book chronicles a young writer’s conversations with his heroes, writers he's read for years who inspired him both to pack his bags to travel and to pick up a pen and write. Michael skillfully coaxes a collective portrait through his interviews, allowing the authors to speak intimately about the writer's life, and how place influences their work and perceptions. In each chapter Michael sets the scene by describing the writer's surroundings, placing the reader squarely in the locale, whether it be Simon Winchester's Massachusetts, Redmond O'Hanlon's London, or Frances Mayes's Tuscany. He then lets the writer speak about life and the world, and through quiet probing draws out fascinating commentary from these remarkable people. For Michael it’s a dream come true, to meet his mentors; for readers, it's an engaging window onto the twin landscapes of great travel writers and the world in which they live.
