STATISTICS IN PRACTICE A practical exploration of alternative approaches to analyzing water-related environmental issues Written by an experienced environmentalist and recognized expert in the field, this text is designed to help water resource managers and scientists to formulate, implement, and interpret more effective methods of water quality management. After presenting the basic foundation for using statistical methods in water resource management, including the use of appropriate hypothesis test procedures and some rapid calculation procedures, the author offers a range of practical problems and solutions on environmental topics that often arise, but are not generally covered. These include: * Formulating water quality standards * Determining compliance with standards * MPNs and microbiology * Water-related, human health risk modeling * Trends, impacts, concordance, and detection limits In order to promote awareness of alternative approaches to analyzing data, both frequentist and Bayesian, statistical methods are contrasted in terms of their applicability to various environmental issues. Each chapter ends with a number of set problems for which full answers are provided. The book also encourages discussion between technical staff and management before embarking on statistical studies.

The Joint Contracts Tribunal Standard Form of Building Contract, JCT 98, is now a well established and widely used form. That is not to say, however, that it is always well understood. It is a large, complex contract with a number of particularly difficult provisions. It is not surprising, therefore, that not much guidance has been published on the form. This book, first written by John Parris in 1982, and revised in 1985, was widely regarded as a valuable commentary on the Standard Form. Unavailable for some years, it has now been substantially updated and completely rewritten by David Chappell. Major changes have occurred since the last edition, including a raft of amendments to the contract itself, much new legislation including the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996, and substantial new case law. The book covers all these as well as the complex performance specified work provisions and the difficult problems of nomination. The nominated sub-contract conditions are referred to where appropriate, and the book contains guidance on related matters, such as warranties, letters of intent and quantum meruit. The book is not simply a re-writing of the contract in simply terms. It contains very valuable insights and much needed guidance on some of the lesser known implications of the current form The book will provide a valuable reference for clients' professional advisers and contractors, as well as for lawyers needing an introduction to the contract.

This book arrives at just the right time to facilitate understanding of performance-based fire risk assessment in buildings – an integral part of the global shift in policy away from traditional prescriptive codes. Yung, an internationally recognised expert on the subject of fire risk assessment, introduces the basic principles and techniques that help the reader to understand the various methodologies that are currently in place or being proposed by different organisations. Through his illustration of basic principles and techniques he enables the reader to conduct their own fire risk assessments. He demonstrates how the probabilities of fire scenarios are assessed based on the probabilities of success and failure of fire protection measures that are in place. He also shows how the consequences of fire scenarios are assessed based on the intensity and speed of fire and smoke spread, the probability and speed of occupant response and evacuation, and the effectiveness and speed of fire department response and rescue efforts. Yung’s clear and practical approach to this highly topical subject enables the reader to integrate the various tools available into a quantitative framework that can be used for decision making. He brings an invaluable resource to all those involved in fire engineering and risk assessment, including students, academics, building designers, fire protection engineers, structural engineers, regulators and risk analysts.

A comprehensive examination of rheometry theory and its practical applications This publication enables readers to understand and characterize the flow properties of complex fluids and, with this knowledge, develop a wide range of industrial and consumer products. The author fills a gap in the current literature by presenting a comprehensive description of the rheological behavior of pastes, suspensions, and granular materials and by offering readers the rheometrical techniques needed to effectively characterize these materials. With his extensive experience in both academic and industrial research, the author is able to take the field to a new level in: * General schematic classification of the behavior of pastes, suspensions, and granular materials * Systematic review, analysis, and quantification of experimental problems with complex fluids * Insight into the flow behavior of complex fluids gained through the most recent discoveries and research techniques * Comprehensive rheometrical analysis of data obtained from research across a broad range of industries In addition to gaining a thorough understanding of the theory underlining rheometry, readers discover its many practical applications. Throughout the publication, specific examples are provided that illustrate how theory is applied, including examples involving food, civil engineering, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, paper coatings, paint and ink, ceramics, sewage sludges, granular materials, and natural materials. In summary, this publication provides a comprehensive review of the behavior of pastes, suspensions, and granular materials as well as detailed analysis of rheometrical techniques. Everything needed to determine the behavior and movement of complex fluids is provided. It is, therefore, a recommended resource for rheologists, engineers, and researchers, as well as students who deal with complex fluids in product formulation, quality and process control, and process plant design.

OSHA (29 CFR 1910.119) has recognized AIChE/DIERS two-phase flow publications as examples of «good engineering practice» for process safety management of highly hazardous materials. The prediction of when two-phase flow venting will occur, and the applicability of various sizing methods for two-phase vapor-liquid flashing flow, is of particular interest when designing emergency relief systems to handle runaway reactions. This comprehensive sourcebook brings together a wealth of information on methods that can be used to safely size emergency relief systems for two-phase vapor-liquid flow for flashing or frozen, viscous or nonviscous fluids. Design methodologies are illustrated by selected sample problems. Written by industrial experts in the safety field, this book will be invaluable to those charged with operating, designing, or managing today's and tomorrow's chemical process industry facilities.
