First published in 1589, Father Lorenzo Scupoli’s “The Spiritual Combat, The Peace of the Soul, and Thoughts on Death” is a classic Catholic text on spiritual discipline. Scupoli’s work was commercially successful and was highly influential soon after it was published. Prominent religious figures such as St. Francis de Sales recommended that everyone under his direction read it every day as he did. Father Scupoli believed that in one’s daily life one must “fight or die” in a spiritual sense. The battles against vice, passions, impurity, and sloth must be fought constantly if there is to be victory of the spirit and soul. Father Scupoli intended that his work be a practical guide to daily living and shows how to replace the egotistical longings of the mind with charity, sacrifice, and discipline. A true believer must trust fully in God’s power and His infinite goodness in order to find eternal life in Heaven. Father’s Scupoli’s work continues to resonant with the faithful and spiritual today as he found lessons in common, timeless human events, and he shows how the faithful may cope with these challenges and remain virtuous and pure of mind.

Roman Catholic Augustinian Canoness Anne Catherine Emmerich was a 19th century German mystic whose life both inspired religious devotion but also was embroiled in great controversy. Born into a poor family, Emmerich’s youth was spent helping to provide for her family through work in farming and as a seamstress. She desired to pursue a life of religious devotion and applied many times to join a convent but was routinely rejected because she could not afford the expected dowry. Eventually she was accepted to an order of Augustinian nuns. Emmerich’s religiosity exceeded all others of her convent and after a few years she began to experience ecstatic visions and stigmatic markings which would take a profound toll on her health. Those visions would form the basis for this work, “The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ”, a detailed account of the suffering and death of Jesus Christ beginning hours before his crucifixion. While there were many who did not believe that her ecstatic visions and stigmatic markings were legitimate, but rather the result of an elaborate hoax, no evidence could ever definitively be shown that this was the case. Her writings, which were transcribed by German poet and novelist Clemens Brentano, have since been a source of great inspiration by those who believe she was truly visited by a higher power.

Cardinal John Henry Newman was a major figure in the Oxford Movement, a response by the members of the Church of England to a perceived attack by the reforming Whig administration who had already legislated a restructuring of the Church of Ireland. Members of the Oxford Movement feared the secular appropriation of ecclesiastical property and moved to assert their religious authority by returning the church to its Catholic origins. In 1854 John Henry Newman became the Rector of what would become University College, Dublin, a position he would remain in for four years. Based on his experiences as the leader of an educational institution he would publish a volume of lectures explaining his philosophy of education entitled “The Idea of a University”. That work which is presented here is an early document of ideas around University education from the first-hand perspective of a man who had a hand in creating one. Religious and educational scholars alike will find much interest in this treatise by one of the most prominent of all religious literary figures.

First published in 1911, “Mysticism” is the seminal work on the subject by noted English Christian mystic and author Evelyn Underhill. The book is divided into two parts which examine both the history and meaning of mysticism and how it can be a part of one’s daily life and spiritual practice. In the first part, “The Mystic Fact”, Underhill explores the theological, psychological, and philosophical underpinnings of mysticism from a historical perspective. Underhill rejected the association often made between mysticism and magic or the occult and sought to clear up the many misunderstandings and confusions surrounding the topic. She contended that mysticism should be viewed as a legitimate psychological phenomenon and an important part of spirituality and spiritual leadership. In the second part, “The Mystic Way”, Underhill examines the application of mysticism in one’s life as a means for spiritual growth. She argues that incorporating mystical practices can help one achieve a more loving and creative life. Underhill’s “Mysticism” remains a widely read and hugely influential work on the historical importance of this little understood practice. It is both a fantastic introduction to the search for spirituality through mysticism and an almost encyclopedic examination of the subject.

A «Kriya Yogi's Kundalini Awakening in the Himalayas» offers readers a deep trek not only to the Himalayas but to an extraordinary woman's spiritual awakening. She took the treacherous Siddhartha Road to Awakening that spanned over 25 years of her various spiritual practices. Her initial aspiration to learn mountaineering had turned into a spiritual quest to attain enlightenment. At a certain point in her life, she became frustrated with the mundane worldly life following an attack of influenza. She had moved to the United States by this time and was in the IT industry in California's Silicon Valley. One would think she had it all, but she felt a deep void inside, experiencing what is called «The Dark night of the Soul» and embarked on that eternal quest for happiness, realizing that the way is within. She began reading books on quantum physics and metaphysics, and found no answers, before eventually stumbling upon Autobiography of a Yogi, by Paramahansa Yogananda (1893-1952), where she learned that the path of Kriya Yoga had been given to humanity to realize our immortality through self-realization and the evolution of consciousness. She started attending the SRF sessions in a local church. Dissatisfied that she had to wait for 3 years of taking classes to be initiated into this sacred science, she started praying fervently to the deathless yogi masaya of all times, Mahavatar Babaji, who goes by numerous names, Shiv-Gorakshanath, Guru Gorakhnath and so on, ironically, he is also called the nameless one and the lightening standing still. Through Babaji's grace, she was then lead to her at that time, a living master, Baba Paramahamsa Hariharananda Giri, a direct disciple of Gyan Avatar Sri Yukteshwar Giri and a peer to Paramahamsa Yogananda., and she was initiated by Baba into the first Kriya Technique. She went into a state of Nirvikalpa Samadhi – having lost all body consciousness where she became only awareness of light, sound, and vibrations. She was walking in drunken bliss for days after her initiation. She saw visions of saints in her third eye which was opened by Baba Paramahamsa Hariharananda Giri. She saw faint visions of past lives where she was a wandering monk in the Himalayas. At this point in her life, she decided to leave all behind and leave for the Himalayas to deepen her quest for enlightenment. Baba stopped her flight to the Himalayas and told her all she needed was a small dwelling to practice her Kriya Yoga. Her spiritual yearning lead to 25 years of practice of Kriya Yoga, a part in Himalayan caves and wandering the glaciers amidst Avalanches and Landslides. Being a mountaineer, she was fearless in her quest. She took to solitary meditation amidst the ferocious rivers like the Ganges apart from the Himalayan caves. She learned a lot from Himalayan Yogi's who enchanted her. She experienced her final Awakening. where she became ONE with the Universe at the cave of Mahavatar Babaji that Yogananda cites in his book. She returned back to her home in California in a deep state of bliss that lasted for several months. At this point, she felt compelled to write a book on her journey to the SELF to inspire others on this path, that there is indeed light at the end of the tunnel with sincere practice and intense seeking. The road to awakening requires a lot of determination and patience. In the final stage, illusion just drops and one realizes techniques take one only this far. Enlightenment is a natural state and was and is always there, but the duality of Maya or illusion quagmires a human being to live in delusion. Following her Awakening, she woke up and realized that the rest of the world is sleeping.

"Lynne Baker shows her compassion and determination to wake the religious and secular communities to action and care. " — Len Matthews, Salvation Army This book takes a very real look into the lives of Christian women who cope with domestic abuse on a daily basis. It explores their experiences of physical, verbal, emotional, sexual, financial, and spiritual abuse at the hands of their perpetrator husbands who claim themselves to be good Christians. Through extensive interviews combined with academic research, the reader comes face to face with the complexity of issues surrounding such domestic abuse and how counselling can be effective through the encouragement of a variety of religious and non-religious coping strategies. Of interest to victims of domestic abuse, as well as to the members of the clergy, psychologists, and counsellors, this book shows there is a place in the Christian church for women to separate and to be divorced without losing their faith.
