Though little is known about Marie de France, her work changed romantic writing forever. «The Lays of Marie de France» challenged social norms and the views of the church during the twelfth century concerning both love and the role of women. She wrote within a court unknown to scholars, in a form of Anglo-Norman French. Inspired by the Greeks and Romans long before her, Marie de France sought to write something not only morally instructive, but memorable, leaving an indelible imprint on the reader's memory. In her «Lays», Marie de France confronts the issue of love as a topic of suffering and misery, fraught with infidelity. What was revolutionary about this, however, was the fact that the infidelity she addressed was committed by women, and in some circumstances condoned. This challenged the submissive role of women in her time, and illustrated them with a sense of power and free will. Her condensed yet powerful imagery remains timeless, still relevant and evocative to modern day readers.

Adventure and mystery readers alike will love following London's most famous fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes, in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's short story collection, «The Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes.» Created in the late 1800's, Sherlock Holmes has become one of the most recognized and endearing sleuths in the mystery genre. In «Sherlock Holmes and the Red-Headed League,» Holmes must figure out the connection between a group of red-headed men, an Encyclopedia Britannica, and a bank robbery for a confused client. Holmes doesn't only take bank robberies and small crimes, though. Many hail «Sherlock Holmes and the Speckled Band» as the best of the detective's stories every written; Holmes must solve the murder of a young woman who was locked in a room alone by herself. What is the only clue? The young woman whispered «the speckled band» to her sister right before she died. The collection also includes Doyle's favorite Holmes tale, «Sherlock Holmes and the Five Orange Pips.» As one of the darker and more popular of Holmes stories, Holmes must solve a string of murders before the culprits strike again. These combined with other classic Holmes tales are the perfect stories for readers of all ages, making «The Adventures and Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes» a perfect addition to any collection.

Hector Hugh Munro (1870-1916) was a British writer, whose witty works satirizing Edwardian society and culture led him to be known as a master of the short story. Munro, better recognized by the pen name Saki, produced works that contrasted the conventions and hypocrisies of Edwardian England with the uncomplicated and sometimes cruel state of nature, a conflict which the latter usually won. This complete edition of short stories will entertain readers with its wonderfully intricate characters, rich political satire and fine narrative style. The book begins with Saki's first works, the «Reginald» stories, a small series of vignettes centered around the societal and cynical young Reginald. Also included are Saki's later and more popular story collections: «Reginald in Russia,» the somewhat macabre tales of «The Chronicles of Clovis,» Saki's best known «Beasts and Super-Beasts,» «The Toys of Peace,» and «The Square Egg.»
