“Origami paper,” such as the kind supplied in this kit, is conveniently already cut square and comes in many colors. It is thin and it folds well for most simple-to intermediate-level projects. But what will you do when your supply runs out?
Almost any kind of paper can be used for origami. Some choices will be better than others for different reasons. Develop the habit of practicing a new origami model by folding it in several available papers: printer and letter papers, gift wrap, newspapers and magazines, old calendars, or even brown paper bags. This is a great way to learn about the different qualities of papers, and with this experience, you will be better able to imagine which papers will be the most suitable for new projects.
You will need to cut the paper to the proper size and shape. The most common shape is a square, which is easy to make. We use two methods for measuring and cutting squares, as illustrated to the right.
To turn a long rectangle into a square, fold at a 45-degree angle, short edge to long edge. Trim and unfold.
If a diagonal crease is not desired, simply take another sheet of the same dimensions, turn it 90 degrees, and lay a corner atop the first sheet. Trim the excess.
Kite Base
Traditional
In this lesson we introduce the first of several standard origami diagram symbols:
• “Valley-Fold” dashed line
• “Existing Crease” line
• “Fold in Front” arrow
• “Fold and Unfold” arrow
• “Rotate” symbol
• Alphabet labels
This remarkable diagramming system makes origami instructions efficient and clear.
Here you will see the Kite Base explained two ways: the first is concise, while the second set is expanded. The concise set requires only three diagrammed steps, and they clearly illustrate all of the essential steps to fold the Kite Base. One must infer the folding techniques necessary to actually fold the Kite Base. The second set uses more than double the steps. The extra diagrams demonstrate the best position of the paper for each step. Experienced folders do not need to be shown these details. Eventually you too will learn to read origami diagrams without extra drawings or any explanatory text. Diagrams are internationally usable, without regard to the written language.
1 Begin with the white side up if using standard origami paper. Valley-fold in half, corner to corner. Unfold.
2 Valley-fold each of the bottom two edges to meet at the crease.
3 The Kite Base, back and front, respectively.
Expanded Instructions
1 Begin with the white side up if using standard origami paper. Position the square on the table with corners pointing top, bottom, left, and right. Fold the paper in half diagonally by moving the bottom corner up to lay upon the top corner.
2 Unfold by returning the top layer corner to the bottom.
3 Move the entire bottom right-side edge to meet the horizontal crease. Hold the edge to the crease while flattening the paper to form a triangle flap.
4 Rotate the paper 180 degrees.
5 Move the entire bottom left-side edge to meet the horizontal crease. Hold the edge to the crease while flattening the paper to form a triangle flap.
6 The Kite Base, back view.

This simple model addresses three key aspects of paper folding:
• Edge-to-crease valley-folding
• Forming sharp points
• Keeping multiple layers of paper registered while folding
We also introduce three new symbols:
• “Fold X More” notation
• “Turn Over” arrow
• “Repeat” arrow
The Kite Base is quick to make, so take the time to achieve perfection. You will need eight Kite Bases (see page 8) of the same size.
1 Open the right-side triangle flap of each of the eight congruent Kite Bases.
