      Среднее количество чисел вычислялось следующим образом. Каждый правильный ответ, вслед за которым Стив давал неправильный, служил доказательством того, что он достиг предела своей «цифровой» памяти. Если он верно запоминал 6 цифр, а на 7 ошибался, мы предполагали, что его цифровая память составляет что-то между 6 и 7, и оценивали ее соответственно в 6,5 балла. В конце занятия мы вычисляли средний балл из всех полученных оценок. Средний балл Стива после четвертого занятия равнялся 8,5 балла, и это означало, что он, как правило, верно запоминает числа из 8 цифр и неверно – числа из 9. Были и исключения: некоторые строки запомнить было проще других.
