Оповідання Ф. С.

From Collins Classics and the author of ‘The Great Gatsby’ comes this razor-sharp satire on the excesses of the Jazz AgeFrom the author of The Great Gatsby, a tale of marriage and disappointment in the Roaring Twenties.Fitzgerald’s rich and detailed novel of the decadent Jazz Era follows the beautiful and vibrant Anthony Patch and his wife Gloria as they navigate the heady lifestyle of the young and wealthy in 1920s New York. Patch is the presumptive heir to his grandfather’s fortune, and keeps his equally spoiled wife in comfort while biding time until his grandfather’s death. Patch is unable to hold down any kind of job and spends his days in luxury, indulging in whatever pleasures are available. But as the money begins to fail, so does their marriage. Patch’s gradual descent into alcoholism, depression and alienation from his marriage ultimately lead to his ruin. Fitzgerald’s novel is a remorseless exploration of the horrors of an age of excess and lost innocence.F. Scott Fitzgerald is regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. Despite his present popularity, Fitzgerald was often in financial trouble, due to the fact that only one of his novels sold well enough to support the extravagant lifestyle that he and his wife Zelda adopted, and later Zelda’s medical bills. His novel The Great Gatsby has sold millions of copies and remains a continual best-seller.

HarperCollins is proud to present its incredible range of best-loved, essential classics. In these eleven stories, Fitzgerald depicts the Roaring Twenties as he lived them. He masterfully blends accounts of flappers and the smart set with more fantastical visions of America, always imbuing his narratives with his trademark themes of money, class, ambition and love.In ‘May Day’, Fitzgerald weaves an account of a raucous Yale alumni party, the participants of which are oblivious to the violent socialist demonstration being acted out around them. ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’ is an unorthodox account of a man who ages backwards, and ‘The Diamond as Big as the Ritz’ tells the story of a young man who discovers that his friend’s family possesses a diamond that is literally larger than the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. This 1922 collection confirmed Fitzgerald as the voice of his generation.

«Забавный случай с Бенджамином Баттоном» и «Алмазная гора» Ф.С. Фицджеральд называл эти два рассказа «фантазиями» – так невероятны их сюжеты. В этих захватывающих историях есть все – и лихо закрученная интрига, и любовь, и великолепный стиль автора. Слушая рассказы в оригинале, вы сможете в полной мере оценить блестящий слог писателя. "The Offshore Pirate" is a short story written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1920. It is one of eight short stories included in Fitzgerald's first published collection, Flappers and Philosophers. The story is about Ardita Farnam, she is on a trip to Florida. Her boat is eventually captured by pirates, she falls in love with their captain. The story was first published in the May 27, 1920 issue of The Saturday Evening Post, his work's third appearance in the magazine that month. It demonstrates his rapid development as a versatile fiction writer. It is the first story that develops Fitzgerald's recurrent plot idea of a heroine won by her lover's performance of an extraordinary deed. The story was adapted to film as The Off-Shore Pirate in 1921, which starred Viola Dana as Ardita. In 2010 an operatic version by Joel Weiss premiered at Christopher Street Opera in New York City. The story had originally ended with the weak explanation that it was all Ardita's dream. Fitzgerald rewrote the conclusion to emphasize the reality of the story: «The last line takes Lorimer at his word. It is one of the best lines I've ever written.» Famous works of the author F. S. Fitzgerald: «This Side of Paradise», «The Beautiful and Damned», «The Great Gatsby», «Tender Is the Night», «The Last Tycoon», «The Diamond as Big as the Ritz», «May Day», «The Rich Boy».
