El estudio introductorio, tras abordar la cuestión de la problemática y, en último término, rechazable atribución a Pedro Calderón de la Barca, examina las modalidades de adaptación del hipotexto devoto (la difundida biografía de Antonio de Govea) a una dimensión dramático-espectacular que también debe tener en cuenta el célebre precedente lopesco de Juan de Dios y Antón Martín. Así, el análisis muestra cómo el retrato heroico y milagrero del santo se ajusta perfectamente a los patrones de la comedia calderoniana. El texto crítico de la pieza se fija a través del cotejo de errores y variantes adiáforas de los testimonios conocidos.

His best known work, «Life Is a Dream», borrows material from several other sources and transforms it into a masterful philosophical drama. The story of King Basil of Poland and his son, Segismund, is a complex and improbable plot featuring themes of the awakened sleeper, Christian grace, pagan superstition, and the popular Spanish theme of God's grace revealing nobility. This play has been translated and performed in many different languages, and it remains an unquestioned masterpiece of world theater.
