Konzentrationslager Ravensbrück, ein Lager speziell für Frauen, war das Ziel der rund 800 Frauen, die an einem sonnigen Morgen im Mai 1939 durch einen Wald 90 Kilometer nördlich von Berlin marschierten. So erzählt es das Buch der Journalistin Sarah Helm, mit dem sie den Opfern von Ravensbrück ein Denkmal setzt. Hausfrauen, Ärztinnen, Politikerinnen, Prostituierte, beschreibt sie weiter, wurden dicht zusammengedrängt durch riesige Tore getrieben, während die Wärterinnen sie traten und schlugen. Doch das war nur der Beginn ihres Martyriums und viele weitere Frauen sollten ihnen folgen. Darunter auch die Schriftstellerin Margarete Buber-Neumann, Kafkas Freundin Milena Jesenská oder die Widerstandskämpferin Olga Benario.
Sarah Helm gelang es, einige der heute noch lebenden Frauen dazu zu bringen, über das Unerhörte zu reden. Und so erzählt sie die grauenvolle Geschichte der Inhaftierten, aber auch die Geschichte der Frauen, die andere Frauen bewachten, erniedrigten, misshandelten und töteten. Für ihre aufrüttelnde Arbeit erhielt die Autorin den Longman-History Today Prize 2016.
