He was the leading ghost-story writer of the 19th century and was central to the development of the genre in the Victorian era. Auch in seinem Werk «Carmilla» über die gleichnamige und lesbische Vampirin zeigt sich Le Fanu in Bestform: Der Roman von 1872 ist hochspannend, düster und erotisch – kurzum: «Carmilla» hat alles, was ein guter Vampir-Roman braucht. «Carmilla» wurde mehrfach verfilmt (unter anderem «Draculas Tochter» von 1936, «Gruft der Vampire» von 1970, «Lesbian Vampire Killers» von 2009), doch wie so oft ist das Original unübertroffen.
