      ʿĪsā ibn Hishām said: With that they grabbed each other by the hand and went off in search of debauchery and immoral pleasure. The Pāshā was sitting beside me, listening and thinking to himself; at times he was laughing, at others invoking God. We too stood up and followed them.

      قال عيسى بن هشام: وصل بنا الحديث في ذلك الروض العاطر إلى حديث الخليع والعمدة والتاجر وقد خرجوا منه ليدخلوا الفسوق من أبوابه ويأخذوا من للهو بأسبابه وكنت لم أزل أسير التردد والتحير في الانتخاب والتخير وانتقاء المجامع الحافلة والمجالس الآهلة متابعة للباشا في طلبها ابتغاء العبرة بها وإن هوت إلى دركات الانحطاط وقضت بالاختلاط بين الغوغاء والاخلاط فما وجدت أدنى إلى بلوغ الاربة وأجدى وأدعى إلى إصابة الغرض وأهدى من تأثر هذه الجماعة إلى منازل اللهو والخلاعه وقلت في نفسي فرصة والله آنت وصدفة حانت يجب دركها ولا ينبغي تركها لما آنسته في ذلك الخليع المحتال من النزوع إلى مواطن الغي والضلال حيث تستعر نيران الشهوات بين اللهاة واللهوات وهذا الخادع ابن بجدتها وناسج بردتها أعرف الناس بمواضعها وأهدى من القطا إلى مواقعها ثم أبنت للباشا ما ارتأيته وما اخترته ونويته. فرأى رأيي في اجتياز هذا السبيل والاهتداء بهذا الدليل.

      ʿĪsā ibn Hishām said: Our description of the perfumed gardens had reached the point of the discussion between the Playboy, ʿUmdah, and Merchant. They had left it to indulge in some debauchery and lewd diversions. For my part I was still exercising caution in selecting crowded venues and places to visit, all in response to the Pāshā’s request for object lessons from which to learn—even if that required us to descend into low haunts and mingle with the lowest levels of society.
