When I first started needle felting, my only tools were a mat and a simple needle. There was little information available so it was a continuous process of trial and error, but I remember feeling very happy as I improved little by little. Since then, there has been a remarkable increase in the amount of equipment available for needle felting, and there is now an abundance of colors and types of wool roving too. In step with these changes, I’ve been trying to improve my own technique, but my progress was actually most marked when I was just starting out.

It would have been so helpful if only I’d had the right craft manual at the time…

It was from that thought that this book was born, with pieces that are suitable for beginners and neat instructions to accompany them. The creations have been photographed from various angles, and as much as possible, photographs have been used to illustrate instructions. There are no difficult techniques used, so beginners can easily make all of these pieces.

Why not get some felting needles and some roving and experience the fun of needle felting for yourself? It would be a great honor for me if your very first creation is an animal from this book.

1 The tools: a needle and mat.

2 Colorful wool roving. There are so many colors, it’s exciting just looking at them.

Image

3 Break off pieces of the wool roving bit by bit. This is easily done by hand.

Image

4 Place the wool roving on the mat and form a shape by punching it gently and carefully with the needle.

Image

5 Make sure you don’t get too worked up and stab your finger!

Image

6 Keep adding pieces of roving to increase the size. This forms one section.

Image

7 Repeat by punching roving to create the smaller parts. This is an ear.

8 Attach ears by punching into the base with the needle.

9 After all that work with the needle, take a little break. Browse inspiring photography and craft books, especially ones that highlight animals’ features and expressions.

10 Wrap colorful roving around the main section as decoration.

11 Punch in the delicate pattern…

      Easy Animals for Beginners

These animals for beginners are pets that will stay by your side to calm and soothe you. They can be made in a short amount of time. Detailed instructions for each project can be found on the “lesson” pages. For those creating wool felt animals for the first time, the section on tools and materials (pages 8-9) is especially helpful. To help you understand the basic techniques, look through the miniature dachshund lesson starting on page 12 to get a grasp on the overall animal-making process. Then have fun making some unique, adorable animals.

      Miniature Mascots

Small and light, these tiny figures can be enjoyed as charms on cell phone straps or as brooch pins.
