Он поощрял своих пациентов говорить обо всем, что приходило им на ум, включая сны, а затем проводил психоанализ услышанного. Он считал, что корни большинства внутренних конфликтов лежат в детстве. Психоанализ послужил катализатором для возникновения сотен школ психотерапии и «разговорной терапии», существующих до сих пор, включая поведенческую, когнитивно-поведенческую, психодинамическую, а также супружескую, семейную и групповую терапии.
