हो?

      You don’t say so!

      Bolo mat!

      बोलो मत!

Note: An exclamation meaning “This can’t be true!” Another version is Are bāp! अरे बाप! (An exclamation of surprise translating closer to “Oh my dear!”)

      Don’t say that!

      Aisā mat bolo!

      ऐसा मत बोलो!

      Is something wrong?

      Kuch galat huā?

      कुछ ग़लत हुआ?

      What?

      Kyā?

      क्या?

      Huh?

      Kyā?

      क्या?

      Say that again!

      Dubārā bol!

      दुबारा बोल!

Note that this can come across as aggressive, like an invi-tation to a fight, verbal or otherwise. If you didn’t catch what the other person said, better remain polite and say kripayā dubārā boli(y)e! = would you say that again, please!

      Are you serious?

      Sahī bāt hai, kyā?

      सही बात है, क्या?

      Is that so?

      Sac hai, kyā?

      सच है, क्या?

If you feel a bit lazy, you could simply ask saccī? “true?”, which is an abbreviated, colloquial from of saccī bāt? “true speech?”.

      Tell me why!

      Batāo kyoñ!

      बताओ क्यों!

      It is true.

      Yah sac hai.

      यह सच है।

      That’s impossible!

      Yah na-mumkin hai!

      यह न-मुमकिन है!

      Enough!

      Bas!

      बस !

      What a mess!

      Kyā gaṛbaṛ hai!

      क्या गड़बड़ है!

      What nonsense!

      Kyā bakvās hai!

      क्या बकवास है!

      How crazy!

      Kyā pāgalpan!

      क्या पागलपन!

      You’re crazy!

      Tum pāgal ho!

      तुम पागल हो!

      What’s all this commotion?

      Yah kyā tamāshā ho gayā?

      यह क्या तमाशा हो गया?

Note: Yah kyā tamāshā ho gayā? literally means “What kind of show is this?” and is used when something is out of control.

      I don’t believe it!

      Yah maiñ nahīñ māntā♂/māntī ♀.

      यह मैं नहीं मानता/मानती।

      You’re joking!

      Tum mazāk uṛā rahe♂/rahī♀ho!

      तुम मज़ाक़ उड़ा रहे/रही हो!

      Are you pulling my leg?

      Merā mazāk uṛā rahe♂/rahī♀ho?

      मेरा मज़ाक़ उड़ा रहे/रही हो?

Are you making a fool of me?

      Mujhe ullū banā rahe♂/rahī♀ho?

      मुझे उल्लू बना रहे/रही हो?

Note: Literally “Are you turning me into an owl?” Unlike in Western fables, in India, the owl is considered a bit of a dimwit. “To be an owl” is equivalent to being a fool, simpleton. Ullū kā paṭṭhā = a still young, but fully-grown offspring of an owl = clumsy fool. In the above sentence, you could replace ullū with bakrā “goat”. Kisī ko bakrā banānā “to turn someone into a goat” = to fool someone, to trick someone.

      Stop joking!

      Bas, mazāk mat uṛāo!

      बस, मज़ाक़ मत उड़ाओ!

      I’m not joking!

      Maiñ mazāk nahīñ uṛā rahā♂/rahī♀hūñ!

      मैं मज़ाक़ नहीं उड़ा रहा/रही हूँ!

      That’s right!

      Sahī bāt hai!

      सही बात है!

      Absolutely!

      Bilkul!

      बिलकुल!

      Definitely!

      Pakkā!

      पक्का!

      Without a doubt!

      Beshak!

      बेशक!

      Of course!

      Zarūr!

      ज़रूर !

      I’m telling the truth!

      Maiñ sac hī bol rahā♂/rahī♀hūñ!

      मैं सच ही बोल रहा/रही हूँ!

      No way!

      Nahīñ re!

      नहीं रे!

      Never!

      Kabhī nahīñ!

      कभी नहीं!

      I guess so.

      Andāz hai.

      अंदाज़ है।

      I think so.

      Mujhe aisā lagtā hai.

      मुझे ऐसा लगता है।

      I hope so.

      Mujhe ummīd hai.

      मुझे उम्मीद है।

      I hope not.

      Mujhe ummīd nahīñ.

      मुझे उम्मीद नहीं।

      I doubt it.

      Shak hai.

      शक
