Известно, что во время плавания Дрейк пользовался навигационной картой, купленной в Лиссабоне. Ее автором был предположительно известный португальский картограф Фернан Ваш Доураду. Испанскому послу в Лиссабоне было приказано найти людей, которые вели переговоры с Дрейком, и снять копию с этой неизвестной испанцам карты, открывающей дорогу в южные моря.

Ее видел С. Пэрчес (Purchas S. Hakluytus Posthumus… Vol. III. P. 461). По-видимому, с нее сняли две рукописные копии. Одна предназначалась для Генриха Наваррского, будущего короля Франции Генриха IV, и была отправлена в Париж. Вторую копию Дрейк подарил своему доброму знакомому архиепископу Кентерберийскому.
