       INTERVIEWEES

      Rites is based on interviews conducted with people with diverse experiences of Female Genital Mutilation throughout the UK.

      The production would not have been possible without the contributions of these individuals, many of whom have asked not to be named. To all of the interviewees we offer our sincere thanks.

      With thanks to ActionAid for providing valuable interviews from people affected by FGM.

      ActionAid work on eradicating female genital muitilation in Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Somaliland, The Gambia and Uganda. They provide direct support to women and girls who have escaped FGM; they support communities to learn and talk about its damaging effects; and they train women to form Women’s Watch Groups to report cases of FGM.

       ABOUT NATIONAL THEATRE OF SCOTLAND

      In its short life, the National Theatre of Scotland has already earned a significant national and international reputation for its daring and originality.

      The National Theatre of Scotland was established in 2006 and has created over 200 productions.

      The National Theatre of Scotland creates much of its work in partnership with theatre-makers, companies, venues and participants across the globe. From extraordinary projects with schools and communities, to the ground-breaking online 5 Minute Theatre to immersive pieces such as David Greig’s The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart, the National Theatre of Scotland’s aspiration is to tell the stories that need to be told and to take work to wherever audiences are to be found.

      Established in 1999, Contact is the national contemporary arts organisation that places young people’s decision-making and leadership at the heart of everything. Young people aged 13+ work alongside our staff in deciding our programme, making staff appointments and serving as Board members. The result is a remarkable, diverse and exciting programme for everyone – whatever your age.

      As well as a wealth of young people’s creative and leadership activity, often with those least likely to engage with the arts, Contact commissions and co-produces around 7-10 new shows each year. These include innovative productions with young people, devised in collaboration with the likes of Stacy Makishi and Forced Entertainment, as well as national touring productions such as The Spalding Suite (Inua Ellams and Benji Reid, with Southbank Centre and Fuel), No Guts No Heart No Glory (Common Wealth) and Credible Likeable Superstar Role Model (Bryony Kimmings).
