       INTRODUCTION

       Ever since life began people have felt the need to pray. They have sensed that God listens and they have found that the more they have prayed, the more they have discovered about God, other people and themselves.

       Over the centuries certain prayers have been written down because they captured what we all want to say but have been unable to express for ourselves.

       Here is a collection of prayers which have stood the test of time; prayers to rely on when our own words fail; prayers to take us close to the heart of God.

       + Christopher Herbert

       Bishop of St Albans

       THE LORD’S PRAYER

       Traditional version

       Our Father, who art in heaven,

       hallowed be thy name;

       thy kingdom come;

       thy will be done;

       on earth as it is in heaven.

       Give us this day our daily bread.

       And forgive us our trespasses,

       as we forgive those who trespass against us.

       And lead us not into temptation;

       but deliver us from evil.

       For thine is the kingdom, the power,

       and the glory,

       for ever and ever. Amen.

       THE LORD’S PRAYER
