Tsotsi is an angry young gang leader in the South African township of Sophiatown. A man without a past, he exists only to kill and steal. But one night, in a moonlit grove of bluegum trees, a woman he attempts to rape forces a shoebox into his arms. The box contains a baby, and his life is inexorably changed. He begins to remember his childhood, to rediscover himself and his capacity for love.
Turned into an Oscar-winning movie in 2006, Tsotsi's raw power and rare humanity show how decency and compassion can survive against the odds.

The Shadow of the Hummingbird explores the loss of innocence and the need to maintain a sense of wonder at the fleeting beauty of the world. The play premiered at the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, USA, in 2014, and an expanded version was subsequently staged at the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town, as well as in Johannesburg and Bloemfontein. Athol Fugard returned to the stage for the first time in 15 years to play the role of Oupa in these two productions.

These three Port Elizabeth plays, which established South African playwright Athol Fugard's international reputation more than twenty years ago, examine with passion and grace close family relationships strained almost unendurably by the harshest of economic and political conditions. «A rare playwright, who could be a primary candidate for either the Nobel Prize in Literature or the Nobel Peace Prize.»–Mel Gussow, The New Yorker
