Gregor von Nyssa war von 372 bis 376 und von 378 bis zu seinem Tod Bischof von Nyssa. Er wird im römischen Katholizismus, der östlichen Orthodoxie, der orientalischen Orthodoxie, dem Anglikanismus und dem Luthertum als Heiliger verehrt. Gregor, sein älterer Bruder Basilius von Caesarea und ihr Freund Gregor von Nazianz sind unter dem Namen «Kappadokische Väter» bekannt. Gregor verfügte nicht über die administrativen Fähigkeiten seines Bruders Basilius oder den zeitgenössischen Einfluss von Gregor von Nazianz, aber er war ein gelehrter Theologe, der bedeutende Beiträge zur Trinitätslehre und zum Nizänischen Glaubensbekenntnis leistete. Die philosophischen Schriften Gregors wurden von Origen beeinflusst. Seit Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts hat das Interesse an den Werken Gregors erheblich zugenommen, insbesondere was die universale Erlösung betrifft, was zu einer Infragestellung vieler traditioneller Interpretationen seiner Theologie geführt hat.
